He was elected to the [Lok Sabha](/source/Lok_Sabha), lower house of the [Parliament of India](/source/Parliament_of_India) from the [Burdwan](/source/Burdwan_(Lok_Sabha_constituency)) constituency of [West Bengal](/source/West_Bengal) in 1996 as a member of the [Communist Party of India (Marxist)](/source/Communist_Party_of_India_(Marxist)).
