# Baklan Point

**Baklan Point** (Bulgarian: нос Баклан, ‘Nos Baklan’ \'nos ba-'klan\) is the rocky east entrance point of [Argonavt Cove](/source/Argonavt_Cove) on the north coast of [Nelson Island](/source/Nelson_Island_(South_Shetland_Islands)) in the [South Shetland Islands](/source/South_Shetland_Islands), [Antarctica](/source/Antarctica) projecting 450 m northwards. The area was visited by early 19th century [sealers](/source/Seal_hunting).

The point is “named after the ocean [fishing trawler](/source/Fishing_trawler) *Baklan* of the Bulgarian company [Ocean Fisheries – Burgas](/source/Ocean_Fisheries_%E2%80%93_Burgas) whose ships operated in the waters of [South Georgia](/source/South_Georgia_Island), [Kerguelen](/source/Kerguelen_Islands), the [South Orkney Islands](/source/South_Orkney_Islands), [South Shetland Islands](/source/South_Shetland_Islands) and [Antarctic Peninsula](/source/Antarctic_Peninsula) from 1970 to the early 1990s. The Bulgarian fishermen, along with those of the [Soviet Union](/source/Soviet_Union), [Poland](/source/Poland) and [East Germany](/source/East_Germany) are the pioneers of modern Antarctic [fishing industry](/source/Fishing_industry).”[1]

## Location

Baklan Point is located at [62°14′44″S 59°06′39″W](https://geohack.toolforge.org/geohack.php?params=62_14_44_S_59_06_39_W), which is 1.85 km east-northeast of [Retamales Point](/source/Retamales_Point), 3.47 km west-southwest of [Cariz Point](/source/Cariz_Point) and 1 km west of [Meana Point](/source/Meana_Point).
