A '''bailie''' or '''baillie''' is a civic officer in the [local government of Scotland](/source/local_government_of_Scotland). The position arose in the [burgh](/source/burgh)s, where bailies formerly held a post similar to that of an [alderman](/source/alderman) or [magistrate](/source/magistrate) (see [bailiff](/source/bailiff)). Baillies appointed the [high constables in Edinburgh](/source/High_Constables_of_Edinburgh), [Leith](/source/High_Constabulary_of_the_Port_of_Leith_(Leith_High_Constables)) and [Perth](/source/Perth%2C_Scotland). Modern bailies exist in Scottish local councils, and the position being a courtesy title, appointees are often requested to provide support to the [lord provost](/source/lord_provost) or [provost](/source/Provost_(civil)) - the ceremonial and civic head of the council - in their various engagements.<ref name="edinburgh.gov.uk">{{cite web|url=http://www.edinburgh.gov.uk/info/796/lord_provost-general_information/505/lord_provost_of_the_city_of_edinburgh/7 |title=Lord Provost of the City of Edinburgh |access-date=March 8, 2011 |url-status=dead |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20110629220132/http://www.edinburgh.gov.uk/info/796/lord_provost-general_information/505/lord_provost_of_the_city_of_edinburgh/7 |archive-date=June 29, 2011 }}</ref><ref name="dundeecity.gov.uk">{{cite web | url=http://www.dundeecity.gov.uk/reports/reports/468-2003.pdf | title=APPOINTMENT OF BAILIES | work=Dundee City Council }}</ref>

==History==
The name was derived from [Old French](/source/Old_French) and used to be synonymous with [provost](/source/provost_(civil)). Several officials held this role often at the appointment of the Church.<ref>{{cite web|url=http://www.glasgow.gov.uk/en/AboutGlasgow/LordProvostsmessage/History+of+the+office+of+Lord+Provost.htm |work=glasgow.gov.uk |url-status=dead |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20090915190033/http://www.glasgow.gov.uk/en/AboutGlasgow/LordProvostsmessage/History%2Bof%2Bthe%2Boffice%2Bof%2BLord%2BProvost.htm | title=Lord Provost and Bailies |archive-date=September 15, 2009 }}</ref>

The [jurisdiction](/source/jurisdiction) of a bailie is called a ''bailiary'' (alt. ''bailiery'').

The office of bailie was abolished in law in Scotland in 1975, and today the position of bailie is a courtesy title.<ref name="dundeecity.gov.uk"/>
