# Baharestan Palace

**Baharestan Palace** (Persian: کاخ بهارستان) is the historic [Iranian parliament](/source/Iranian_parliament) building, inaugurated in 1906 (see the [Persian Constitutional Revolution](/source/Persian_Constitutional_Revolution)). [The neighborhood](/source/Baharestan_(district)) where the palace is located was named after the complex.[1]

## History

The palace was originally built by [Mirza Hosein Khan Sepahsalar](/source/Mirza_Hosein_Khan_Sepahsalar), a [Qajar era](/source/Qajar_Iran) prime minister, as his private residence. Afterwards, it was owned by [Naser al-Din Shah Qajar](/source/Naser_al-Din_Shah_Qajar). During the [Persian Constitutional Revolution](/source/Persian_Constitutional_Revolution), it became the Iranian parliament building. It was [bombarded in 1908](/source/1908_bombardment_of_the_Majlis) by the forces of [Mohammad Ali Shah Qajar](/source/Mohammad_Ali_Shah_Qajar) leading to the [Minor Tyranny](/source/Minor_Tyranny).

Baharestan Palace remained the location for the [lower house](/source/Lower_house) of the [Iranian parliament](/source/Islamic_Consultative_Assembly) (the [Senate](/source/Senate_of_Iran) had moved to a new building in central [Tehran](/source/Tehran)) until the [Iranian Revolution](/source/Iranian_Revolution) in 1979. After the revolution, the parliament became [unicameral](/source/Unicameral) and met at the Senate building, and to [a newly built building](/source/Islamic_Consultative_Assembly#Building) in Baharestan in 2004.
