'''Bagpath''' is a [hamlet](/source/hamlet_(place)) in [Gloucestershire](/source/Gloucestershire), England, in the [Ozleworth](/source/Ozleworth) valley south of the village of [Kingscote](/source/Kingscote%2C_Gloucestershire) and forming part of Kingscote [civil parish](/source/civil_parish). The hamlet consists of two separate settlements of Bagpath and '''Newington Bagpath''', although residents of Newington Bagpath refer to their settlement solely as Newington.

The hamlet is sparsely populated with a population of about 100, and a small number of farms. Almost all of the area is pasture or woodland.

The hamlet falls under the authority of [Cotswold District Council](/source/Cotswold_District_Council) and is represented in Parliament by [Roz Savage](/source/Roz_Savage),<ref>{{cite web|title=Dr Roz Savage|url=https://members.parliament.uk/member/5352/contact|publisher=Parliament of the United Kingdom|access-date=1 January 2025}}</ref> [Liberal Democrat](/source/Liberal_Democrat_(UK)) [MP](/source/Member_of_parliament) for [South Cotswolds](/source/South_Cotswolds_(UK_Parliament_constituency)).<ref>{{cite web|title=Location of South Cotswolds|url=https://members.parliament.uk/constituency/4297/location |publisher=Parliament of the United Kingdom|access-date=1 January 2025}}</ref>

==History==
A variation in spelling "Neunton & Pagpath" appears in 1418, when William Stoke was the parson of the church.<ref>Plea Rolls of the Court of Common Pleas; National Archives; CP 40/629; http://aalt.law.uh.edu/H5/CP40no629/bCP40no629dorses/IMG_1714.htm {{Webarchive|url=https://web.archive.org/web/20200901153151/http://aalt.law.uh.edu/H5/CP40no629/bCP40no629dorses/IMG_1714.htm |date=1 September 2020 }}; 4th entry. William Stoke, parson, was acting as an Executor, with Thomas Frome, canon of Wells, for John Forstall</ref>

Although the population is now only about 100, [census](/source/Census_in_the_United_Kingdom) records from the 1900s show it was once about 1,000. The parish had its own church and school,<ref>{{cite web |title=Newington Bagpath, Gloucestershire Family History Guide |url=https://www.parishmouse.co.uk/gloucestershire/newington-bagpath-gloucestershire-family-history-guide/ |publisher=Parish Mouse |accessdate=5 July 2020 |archive-date=1 September 2020 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20200901153239/https://www.parishmouse.co.uk/gloucestershire/newington-bagpath-gloucestershire-family-history-guide/ |url-status=live }}</ref> but the former school house is now a private home and, although in private ownership, the church is now abandoned. The parish of St Bartholomew was united with the neighbouring parish of [Owlpen](/source/Owlpen) from medieval times to the late 19th century. The west tower is Norman work and the nave is medieval, with a chancel added by [Samuel Sanders Teulon](/source/Samuel_Sanders_Teulon) in 1858. The church was declared redundant in about 1973.<ref>{{cite news |last1=Craig |first1=Ian |title=Redundant St Bartholomew's Church in Newington Bagpath near Kingscote to be converted to home after Cotswold District Council gave planning permission |url=https://www.wiltsglosstandard.co.uk/news/10483715.redundant-st-bartholomews-church-in-newington-bagpath-near-kingscote-to-be-converted-to-home-after-cotswold-district-council-gave-planning-permission/ |accessdate=5 July 2020 |work=Wilts and Gloucestershire Standard |date=16 June 2013 |archive-date=1 September 2020 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20200901153153/https://www.wiltsglosstandard.co.uk/news/10483715.redundant-st-bartholomews-church-in-newington-bagpath-near-kingscote-to-be-converted-to-home-after-cotswold-district-council-gave-planning-permission/ |url-status=live }}</ref>

Near the church is the site of a [motte-and-bailey castle](/source/motte-and-bailey_castle) dating to the [Norman](/source/Normans) era. The earthworks have an overall diameter of 150 ft. The mound rises to 4 ft above ground level and is surrounded by a ditch 5 ft below which fades out on the scarp side. There were indications of an entrance ramp on the north side. A pit dug into the top displayed rubble and possible vaulting. There is a rectangular building platform immediately to the north of the motte.<ref>{{National Heritage List for England|num=1009160|desc=Motte castle 180m south west of Newington Bagpath|access-date=5 July 2020}}</ref>

The Revd Alan Gardner Cornwall of Ashcroft was rector of Bagpath in the early nineteenth century, and published a standard account of life in this rural area at that time.<ref>{{Cite web |url=http://www.owlpen.com/sites/default/files/cornwall_diary.pdf |title=Owlpen archives: Memoir of Parson Cornwall |access-date=28 August 2015 |archive-date=1 September 2020 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20200901153137/https://www.owlpen.com/sites/default/files/cornwall_diary.pdf |url-status=live }}</ref> His sons, [Clement Francis Cornwall](/source/Clement_Francis_Cornwall) and Henry Pennant Cornwall emigrated to [British Columbia](/source/British_Columbia), Canada while it was still a British colony during the gold rush. There they established a ranch and constructed a 'stopping house', Ashcroft Manor, on the Cariboo Gold Trail above the later site of the small town of [Ashcroft, British Columbia](/source/Ashcroft%2C_British_Columbia), built for travellers in search of gold, giving them a place to stay and stable their horses. Photographs and maps of Bagpath and the surrounding area are held in the town's museum.

The nearby [Monarch's Way](/source/Monarch's_Way) long-distance footpath is based on the route taken by King [Charles II of England](/source/Charles_II_of_England) whilst on the run after defeat at the [Battle of Worcester](/source/Battle_of_Worcester).<ref>{{cite web |title=Monarch's Way |url=https://www.ldwa.org.uk/ldp/members/show_path.php?path_name=Monarch%27s+Way |publisher=Long Distance Walkers Association |accessdate=1 September 2020 |archive-date=1 September 2020 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20200901153157/https://www.ldwa.org.uk/ldp/members/show_path.php?path_name=Monarch%27s+Way |url-status=live }}</ref>

In 2003 the local community successfully opposed a [PPG7](/source/PPG7) planning application for a large country house in the valley, which they argued would spoil the unique countryside in the area.<ref>{{cite web |title=Brimpscombe Park Bagpath Kingscote Tetbury Erection of a new Country House, garden and associated park |url=https://www.cmis.cotswold.gov.uk/CMIS5/Document.ashx?czJKcaeAi5tUFL1DTL2UE4zNRBcoShgo=lCGW33iZwtMfByJzF%2BAWgy8f8ii0cb9lSgjis%2Bhp96jhMFnWBtAIkg%3D%3D&mCTIbCubSFfXsDGW9IXnlg%3D%3D=hFflUdN3100%3D&kCx1AnS9%2FpWZQ40DXFvdEw%3D%3D=hFflUdN3100%3D&uJovDxwdjMPoYv%2BAJvYtyA%3D%3D=ctNJFf55vVA%3D&FgPlIEJYlotS%2BYGoBi5olA%3D%3D=NHdURQburHA%3D&d9Qjj0ag1Pd993jsyOJqFvmyB7X0CSQK=ctNJFf55vVA%3D&WGewmoAfeNR9xqBux0r1Q8Za60lavYmz=ctNJFf55vVA%3D&WGewmoAfeNQ16B2MHuCpMRKZMwaG1PaO=ctNJFf55vVA%3D |publisher=Cotswold Council |accessdate=5 July 2020 |archive-date=1 September 2020 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20200901153152/https://www.cmis.cotswold.gov.uk/CMIS5/Document.ashx?czJKcaeAi5tUFL1DTL2UE4zNRBcoShgo=lCGW33iZwtMfByJzF%2BAWgy8f8ii0cb9lSgjis%2Bhp96jhMFnWBtAIkg%3D%3D&mCTIbCubSFfXsDGW9IXnlg%3D%3D=hFflUdN3100%3D&kCx1AnS9%2FpWZQ40DXFvdEw%3D%3D=hFflUdN3100%3D&uJovDxwdjMPoYv%2BAJvYtyA%3D%3D=ctNJFf55vVA%3D&FgPlIEJYlotS%2BYGoBi5olA%3D%3D=NHdURQburHA%3D&d9Qjj0ag1Pd993jsyOJqFvmyB7X0CSQK=ctNJFf55vVA%3D&WGewmoAfeNR9xqBux0r1Q8Za60lavYmz=ctNJFf55vVA%3D&WGewmoAfeNQ16B2MHuCpMRKZMwaG1PaO=ctNJFf55vVA%3D |url-status=live }}</ref> Since then a number of community events have taken place, including what are intended to become annual events: the Bagpath street party and a fireworks display for local residents.<ref>{{cite web|title=News & Events|url=http://www.kingscoteonline.co.uk/category/news-events|website=Kingscote on line|access-date=1 January 2025}}</ref>
