thumb|Map of the village
'''Bagaya''' is a settlement in [Senegal](/source/Senegal)
in the [department](/source/department_(administrative_division)) [Bignona](/source/Bignona), in the region [Ziguinchor Region](/source/Ziguinchor_Region), in the [Casamance](/source/Casamance) area. Bagaya belongs to the [rural community](/source/rural_community) of [Balinghore](/source/Balinghore) in the [arrondissement](/source/arrondissement) of [Tendouck](/source/Tendouck).
It is located on the road from [Bignona](/source/Bignona) to [Elana](/source/Elana)
between {{Interlanguage link|Mandégane|fr}} and {{Interlanguage link|Diatock|fr}}.

The village consists of [quarter](/source/Quarter_(country_subdivision))s, a group of about 20 [house](/source/house)s scattered in the [bush](/source/The_Bush). Around the village there are [rice](/source/rice) fields (''rizières'') at the edge of the [Casamance River](/source/Casamance_River).

==People and economy==
The village has 142 families.<ref name="pepam">{{cite web |url=http://www.pepam.gouv.sn/acces.php?idloc=02131001 |title=Programme d'eau potable et d'assinissement du Millénaire |publisher=PEPAM |accessdate=2013-01-01 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20160303185712/http://www.pepam.gouv.sn/acces.php?idloc=02131001 |archive-date=2016-03-03 |url-status=dead }}</ref>
There is a very young population, but the region has a huge shortage of [infrastructure](/source/infrastructure).
Many people are fleeing to the major cities of Senegal because of the lack of [school](/source/school)s and [employment](/source/employment).
There is hardly any [industry](/source/Industrial_sector) or [food processing](/source/food_processing).

== Facilities ==
The roads and buildings are in bad shape.
Not all the houses are equipped with [electricity](/source/electricity).
Even if there is electricity then the refrigerator, or the [television](/source/television) cannot be turned on because the [family income](/source/family_income) is much too low.
There are daily [power cut](/source/power_cut)s of 1 to 3 hours duration; frequently between 19:00 and 23:00, possibly also during noon.

There is a [dispensary](/source/dispensary) and a [maternity hospital](/source/maternity_hospital).
People in Bagaya are aware of good [hygiene](/source/hygiene) and [medical treatment](/source/medical_treatment). [Traditional medicine](/source/Traditional_medicine) and [superstition](/source/superstition) is also practiced a lot.

Students can attend the [university](/source/university) of [Ziguinchor](/source/Ziguinchor), or [Dakar](/source/Dakar).
They can attend [secondary school](/source/secondary_school) in [Bignona](/source/Bignona).

People are not conscious about the effects of [waste](/source/waste) on the [environment](/source/Natural_environment).
Plans should be developed to recuperate e.g. [batteries](/source/Battery_(electricity)) and [plastic](/source/plastic)s.

==Agriculture and nutrition==
[[File:Bagaya-rijstvelden.jpg|thumb|left|[Rice field](/source/Rice_field)s in Bagaya]]

The village is located in the [alluvium](/source/alluvium) of the [Casamance River](/source/Casamance_River).

Most families produce [rice](/source/rice), [peanut](/source/peanut)s, [mango](/source/mango)s, [cashew](/source/cashew) nuts, [millet](/source/millet), [maniok](/source/maniok), [oil palm](/source/oil_palm) of [coconut](/source/coconut) for private or local consumption.

Animals like [chicken](/source/chicken), [goat](/source/goat) and [cow](/source/cow) are much elevated. [Milk](/source/Milk) is not used for human consumption because there is no [cooling infrastructure](/source/Refrigeration), and because of the lack of [transportation](/source/transportation).

[Vegetable](/source/Vegetable)s are not sufficiently produced or eaten.
The meals are rather monotonous; two meals per day of [rice](/source/rice) would not be exceptional.
In the morning people frequently eat [millet](/source/millet).
[Meat](/source/Meat) is only prepared at feasts.

==Water and climate==
[Water source](/source/Water_source)s are 20 m deep.
There is normally one source for each quarter.
The sources produce water during the whole year.
[Water](/source/Water) is carried on the head.
Drinking water and washing water is kept in separate [barrel](/source/barrel)s.

Rain is normally plentiful during the [rain season](/source/rain_season) of July–August.
Rice is planted mid-August and [harvest](/source/harvest)ed around [Christmas](/source/Christmas) and [New Year](/source/New_Year).
If there is not enough rain, then the rice cannot be planted, and [famine](/source/famine) occurs during the [dry season](/source/dry_season).

===Problems with the water supply===
During the 80's the Senegalese Government approved an integrated project for the Tendouck region. In this project, an important activity was to provide drinking-water to the local community. A water tower was built in Mandégane to serve the villages of Bagaya and Mandégane. Today, 32 years later, after multiple promises the tower is still not in production. [Sint-Ulriks-Kapelle](/source/Sint-Ulriks-Kapelle) sponsored in 2009 the connection of the houses to the public distribution net. People are anxiously waiting for the water supply to become available. Drinking salty water from the different small water pits is not an option.

==Projects==

Since 1989, Bagaya is twinned with [Sint-Ulriks-Kapelle](/source/Sint-Ulriks-Kapelle), that support multiple projects like: the [school](/source/school), the medical center, the [maternity](/source/maternity), the rice peeling machine, the mill, fresh water distribution, textile coloring, the Foyer des Jeunes.

The vegetable yard is an integrated rural development project supported by the [NGO](/source/Non-governmental_organization)s [ASRADEC](/source/ASRADEC), [USAID](/source/USAID) and [NCOS](/source/%3Anl%3ANCOS) ([Belgium](/source/Belgium))
for the villages of Bagaya, {{Interlanguage link|Dianki|fr}}, and {{Interlanguage link|Kartiack|fr}} to stimulate
agricultural activities like cultivation, education and product commercialization.

A project with a [canoe](/source/canoe) did not succeed because the [transport over the road](/source/Road_transport) has moved forward a lot during the last years. The canoe was much too slow, too big, and consumed too much fuel, so it was not economical anymore. A voyage to [Ziguinchor](/source/Ziguinchor), about 80 km, takes about 8 hours. Over the road it takes only 2 hours (about 55 km). A minivan can transport 10 people, but for the canoe, 50 passengers are required to pay the fuel and other costs.

In [Affiniam](/source/Affiniam) a dam was built in 1988 in collaboration with [China](/source/China) as a barrier to keep the salt [sea water](/source/sea_water) from spoiling the fields, and to be able to [irrigate](/source/irrigate).
Because the sweet water could not flush through neither, and flow to the [Atlantic Ocean](/source/Atlantic_Ocean) the salt water evaporated, and the fields salified.

The [mangrove](/source/mangrove) is completely dry now.

The local fishery has completely vanished.

Fish has to be transported from 50 km distance by trucks.

==Culture and folklore==
[[File:Samay (Casamance-Senegal).jpg|thumb|[Samay](/source/Samay_(mythology))]]
thumb|Foyer des jeunes in Bagaya

The [Diola](/source/Jola_people) people are mostly [Muslim](/source/Muslim), but some also practice their [Traditional religion](/source/African_traditional_religions).

The local language is the [Jola language](/source/Jola_language).

Educated people can usually speak good [French](/source/French_language).

The community is strictly [hierarchical](/source/hierarchical), and managed by the [village chief](/source/Village_head).

During [folk festival](/source/folk_festival)s (''Journées culturelles'') people are dancing around [mythological](/source/mythology) masked figures like the [Samay](/source/Samay_(mythology)), the [Kumpo](/source/Kumpo), and the [Niasse](/source/Niasse).

==Human settlement==
The main road goes from NE ({{Interlanguage link|Mandégane|fr}}) to SW ({{Interlanguage link|Diatock|fr}}).
The quarters Énébané, Elegning, and Foutama are located on the main road.
The other quarters are situated SW-W-NW or S-SE-E from the main road.

==Communication==
There is no [internet](/source/internet) access.
Fixed telephone lines are not available - still there is 1 single [telephone booth](/source/telephone_booth) in the neighbourhood of the village chief.

[Mobile communication](/source/Mobile_communication)s are commonly available be it very expensive for the local people.
