# Bad Boll

**Bad Boll** (baːt ˈbɔl) is a [municipality](/source/Municipalities_of_Germany) in the district of [Göppingen](/source/G%C3%B6ppingen_(district)) in [Baden-Württemberg](/source/Baden-W%C3%BCrttemberg), [Germany](/source/Germany).

## History

In 1321, the [County of Württemberg](/source/County_of_W%C3%BCrttemberg) purchased title over Bad Boll and came to possess it *[de jure](/source/De_jure)*, but it was *[de facto](/source/De_facto)* still controlled by a local priory. That changed with the conversion of the then [Duchy of Württemberg](/source/Duchy_of_W%C3%BCrttemberg) to [Lutheranism](/source/Lutheranism) and the seizure of church property. Since 1321, Bad Boll has been placed under the jurisdiction of [Göppingen](/source/G%C3%B6ppingen). The [hot springs](/source/Hot_springs) around Bad Boll were discovered in 1595. A year later, the first spa in the municipality was constructed by [Heinrich Schickhardt](/source/Heinrich_Schickhardt). That spa was rebuilt and expanded from 1823 to 1825. Eckwälden was incorporated into Bad Boll in 1933. The first [Evangelical Academy](/source/Evangelical_Academy) in Germany was established in Bad Boll in 1945. Bad Boll changed its name from Boll to Bad Boll in 2007.[2]

## Geography

The municipality (*[Gemeinde](/source/Municipalities_of_Germany)*) of Bad Boll is found towards the western periphery of [the district](/source/G%C3%B6ppingen_(district)) of [Göppingen](/source/G%C3%B6ppingen) in [Baden-Württemberg](/source/Baden-W%C3%BCrttemberg), one of the [16 States](/source/States_of_Germany) of the [Federal Republic of Germany](/source/Federal_Republic_of_Germany). Bad Boll is physically located in the [foothills of the central Swabian Jura](/source/Foothills_of_the_central_Swabian_Jura), though a portion of its municipal area lies in the [Middle Kuppenalb](/source/Middle_Kuppenalb) to the southeast. Elevation above sea level in the municipal area ranges from a high 734 meters (2,408 ft) [Normalnull](/source/Normalnull) (NN) to a low of 367 meters (1,204 ft).[2]

A portion of the Federally-protected [Teufelsloch-Kaltenwang](/source/Teufelsloch-Kaltenwang) [nature reserve](/source/Naturschutzgebiet) is located in Bad Boll's municipal area.[2]

## Politics

Bad Boll has one borough (*Ortsteile*), Boll, and two villages: Bad Boll and Eckwälden. Bad Boll is part of a [municipal association](/source/Municipal_association_(Germany)) with the municipalities of [Aichelberg](/source/Aichelberg), [Dürnau](/source/D%C3%BCrnau,_G%C3%B6ppingen), [Gammelshausen](/source/Gammelshausen), [Hattenhofen](/source/Hattenhofen,_Baden-W%C3%BCrttemberg), and [Zell unter Aichelberg](/source/Zell_unter_Aichelberg).[2]

### Coat of arms

The municipal [coat of arms](/source/Coat_of_arms) of Bad Boll displays a [white](/source/Argent) fountain with white waters and a [stag antler](/source/Hirschstange), in [black](/source/Sable_(heraldry)), upon a [field](/source/Field_(heraldry)) of [green](/source/Vert_(heraldry)). The fountain is a reference to the local [hot springs](/source/Hot_springs) and the stag antler to Württemberg. The [Federal Ministry of the Interior](/source/Federal_Ministry_of_the_Interior,_Building_and_Community) awarded this coat of arms and a municipal flag to Bad Boll on 25 January 1961.[2]

## Transportation

Bad Boll is connected to [Germany's network of roadways](/source/Driving_in_Germany) by its local *[Landesstraßen](/source/Landesstra%C3%9Fe)* and *[Kreisstraßen](/source/Kreisstra%C3%9Fe)*, which join the [Bundesautobahn 8](/source/Bundesautobahn_8) at [Aichelberg](/source/Aichelberg). From 1926 to 1989, Bad Boll was also connected to Germany's railroads by the [Voralbahn](/source/Voralbahn), which was formally closed in 1997 but not dismantled. Local public transportation is provided by the [Filsland Mobilitätsverbundes](/source/Filsland_Mobilit%C3%A4tsverbundes).[2]
