'''''Bad Bad One''''' is the fourth studio album by American singer-songwriter [Meredith Brooks](/source/Meredith_Brooks). It was released on May 21, 2002, by Gold Circle Records. Following the commercial disappointment of her previous album, ''[Deconstruction](/source/Deconstruction_(Meredith_Brooks_album))'' (1999), Brooks was dropped from [Capitol Records](/source/Capitol_Records). Brooks subsequently signed to Gold Circle Records and built a [home studio](/source/home_recording) to record and produce the album herself, with additional production from frequent collaborator [David Darling](/source/Dave_Darling). ''Bad Bad One'' received little commercial recognition, with Gold Circle Records folding shortly after the album's release. Despite this minimal commercial recognition, the album received praise from [music critics](/source/Music_journalism). In 2004, the album was [reissued](/source/Reissue) under the title '''''Shine''''' by Kissing Booth Records. The reissue had a rearranged track listing and included an additional remix of "Shine," which was featured as the theme song for ''[Dr. Phil](/source/Dr._Phil_(talk_show))'' from 2004 to 2008.

==Recording==
Brooks recorded over 50 songs for the album over the course of two years before she finalized a track listing of 12 songs.<ref name="billboard">{{cite magazine |last=Newman |first=Melinda |title=The Beat: Golden Girl |magazine=[Billboard](/source/Billboard_(magazine)) |volume=114 |issue=6 |page=12 |publication-date=February 9, 2002}}</ref><ref name="mtv">{{ cite news | url=https://www.mtv.com/news/1452780/meredith-brooks-preps-album-produces-jennifer-love-hewitt-lp/ | archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20141015020248/http://www.mtv.com/news/1452780/meredith-brooks-preps-album-produces-jennifer-love-hewitt-lp/ | url-status=dead | archive-date=October 15, 2014 | title=Meredith Brooks Preps Album, Produces Jennifer Love Hewitt LP |publisher=MTV News|date=March 6, 2002 | access-date=May 2, 2022}}</ref> With ''Bad Bad One'', Brooks sought to take more control over her music, resulting in her building a [home studio](/source/Home_recording) and learning [Pro Tools](/source/Pro_Tools) so that she could freely engineer and produce the entire album herself.<ref name="mtv"/> Speaking on the freedom that this home studio allowed her, Brooks commented: "Musically, lyrically, vocally, and guitar-wise, I realized that for the first time I could do everything I wanted to do. If I didn't like my vocal, I could just go down at 2 a.m. and redo it. It allowed me to develop more."<ref name="billboard"/> Brooks described ''Bad Bad One'' as a complete fulfillment of her creative vision, claiming that she was not under the usual pressure to be "politically, spiritually or romantically correct."<ref>{{cite magazine|title=Artist Activity: Meredith Brooks|magazine=[Radio & Records](/source/Radio_%26_Records)|issue=1448|page=75|date=April 12, 2002}}</ref>

==Release==
The release of ''Bad Bad One'' was met with several delays. The album had two set release dates—April 23<ref name="billboard"/> and then May 5<ref name="billboard4">{{cite magazine |last=Taylor|first=Chuck|title=Reviews & Previews |magazine=[Billboard](/source/Billboard_(magazine)) |volume=114 |issue=16 |page=26 |publication-date=April 20, 2002}}</ref>—before finally being released on May 21, 2002.<ref name="billboard3">{{cite magazine |last=|first=|title=The 'Bitch' Is Back |magazine=[Billboard](/source/Billboard_(magazine)) |volume=114 |issue=14 |page=8B |publication-date=April 6, 2002}}</ref> Gold Circle Records folded almost immediately after the album's release, resulting in it receiving very minimal promotion. In 2004, [Dr. Phil](/source/Dr._Phil) selected "Shine" to be the theme song for his [eponymous talk show](/source/Dr._Phil_(talk_show)). This renewed interest in the song resulted in a reissue of ''Bad Bad One'' on September 21, 2004, by [Savoy Records](/source/Savoy_Records). The reissue was titled ''Shine'' and featured a rearranged track listing and an additional remix of "Shine" used during ''Dr. Phil''.<ref name="billboard5">{{cite magazine |last=Newman|first=Melinda|title=Brooks Gets Second Chance to 'Shine' |magazine=[Billboard](/source/Billboard_(magazine)) |volume=116 |issue=34 |page=13 |publication-date=August 21, 2004}}</ref>

MacKenzie Wilson of [AllMusic](/source/AllMusic) praised the versatile and carefree nature of the album. She commented: "Meredith Brooks captured the moment and claimed victory on ''Bad Bad One''. She found an inspiration -- it's fiery and passionate while also literate and cathartic -- and ran with it."<ref name="allmusic"/> Michael Paoletta of ''[Billboard](/source/Billboard_(magazine))'' referred to the effort as a "welcome return that shows the kids a thing or two." Paoletta highlighted "Shine," "You Don't Know Me," and "Where Lovers Meet" as standouts from the album.<ref name="billboard2">{{cite magazine |last=Paoletta |first=Michael |title=Reviews & Previews |magazine=[Billboard](/source/Billboard_(magazine)) |volume=114 |issue=22 |page=26 |publication-date=June 1, 2002}}</ref>
