# Babis Intzoglou

**Babis Intzoglou** (Greek: Μπάμπης Ιντζόγλου; born 1 April 1949) is a [Greek](/source/Greeks) former professional [footballer](/source/Association_football) who played as a [defender](/source/Defender_(association_football)).

## Club career

Intzoglou started football at a youth level with AE Nikaia and signed his first professional deal in 1965 at [Ionikos](/source/Ionikos_F.C.). In 1969, he played in the [first division](/source/Super_League_Greece) with [Panionios](/source/Panionios_F.C.), where his older brother [Thanasis](/source/Thanasis_Intzoglou) was playing.[1] During his tenure with Panionios, he assisted in securing the [1971 Balkans Cup](/source/1971_Balkans_Cup) for Panionios by defeating [Besa Kavajë](/source/KF_Besa_Kavaj%C3%AB).[2] During his tenure with Panionios, he featured in the [1969–70 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup](/source/1969%E2%80%9370_Inter-Cities_Fairs_Cup), and the [1971–72 UEFA Cup](/source/1971%E2%80%9372_UEFA_Cup), where they eliminated [Atlético Madrid](/source/Atl%C3%A9tico_Madrid).[3] In the summer of 1975 he played abroad in the [Canadian National Soccer League](/source/Canadian_National_Soccer_League) with Toronto Homer.[4]

On 21 July 1976, Intzoglou was transferred to [AEK Athens](/source/AEK_Athens_F.C.) for a fee of 3 million [drachmas](/source/Modern_drachma).[5] Under [František Fadrhonc](/source/Franti%C5%A1ek_Fadrhonc) he was converted from a center back to a full-back, where his impact on the defense, became more effective. He was a key player in AEK's course to the [semi-finals of the 1976–77 UEFA Cup](/source/1976%E2%80%9377_UEFA_Cup#Semi-finals).[6] He also played with the "yellow-blacks" in the [next season](/source/1977%E2%80%9378_UEFA_Cup)'s UEFA Cup and the 2 following seasons in the [European Cup](/source/UEFA_Champions_League). In his 4 seasons at the club, he won 2 Championships and a [Greek Cup](/source/Greek_Football_Cup) including a domestic double in 1978.[7]

On 18 August 1980, he signed for [Diagoras](/source/Diagoras_F.C.) in the [second division](/source/Super_League_Greece_2)[8] for three years and later returned to Ionikos, where he retired at the summer of 1984.[9]

## International career

Intzoglou was a member of the [Greece U21](/source/Greece_national_under-21_football_team) when it was formed for the first time in 1968 with the aim of participating in the 1st [Balkan Youth Championship](/source/Balkan_Youth_Championship) held at the [Kaftanzoglio Stadium](/source/Kaftanzoglio_Stadium) in [Thessaloniki](/source/Thessaloniki). In the same year he was a key member of the [Greece U19](/source/Greece_national_under-19_football_team) that participated in the Final phase of the [European Championship](/source/1968_UEFA_European_Under-18_Championship) held in [France](/source/France).

Intzoglou played with [Greece](/source/Greece_national_football_team) in 1969, and made nine appearances.[10] His first international appearance was on 4 May 1969, in a 2–2 away draw against [Portugal](/source/Portugal_national_football_team) for the [FIFA World Cup](/source/FIFA_World_Cup) qualifiers. He was unlucky and was replaced in the 24th minute due to injury.[11] His last appearance in the shirt with the national emblem was on 23 March 1977 in a 4–0 away defeat by [Czechoslovakia](/source/Czechoslovakia_national_football_team) in a friendly match, in which he played until the 77th minute.[12]

## Personal life

Intzoglou's brothers [Thanasis](/source/Thanasis_Intzoglou) and Christos were also footballers, as well as his son, [Lefteris](/source/Lefteris_Intzoglou), who also played for AEK Athens.[13] After retiring as a footballer, he worked as a private employee in a large electrical company.
