**Syed Shah Jamal Uddin Naqvi Bukhari** ([Urdu](/source/Urdu):سید شاہ جمال الدین نقوی بخاری; 1588–1671) also known as **Baba Shah Jamal** was a [Sufi saint](/source/Sufi_saint). He is also known as Hussaini Syed.[1]

## Ancestry

Syed Shah Jamal was descendant of Makhdoom Syed Sadruddin Rajan Qattaal, who was a son of Makhdoom Syed Sultan Ahmad Kabir Bin Makhdoom Syed [Jalaluddin Surkh-Posh Bukhari](/source/Jalaluddin_Surkh-Posh_Bukhari).[1] Syed Shah Jamal belonged to the school of [Qadriyya](/source/Qadiriyya), [Suhrawardiyya](/source/Suhrawardiyya) and [Chishtiyya](/source/Chishti_Order) sufi orders. Baba Syed Shah Jamal's descendants mostly live in Kotli Shah Saleem, [Shakargarh](/source/Shakargarh). His grandson Syed Shah Saleem Bin Baba Syed Shah Moosa Bin Shah Jamal's Tomb is situated in Kotli Shah Saleem village.

## Life

He lived in [Lahore](/source/Lahore)'s neighbourhood of [Ichhra](/source/Ichhra) at the time of [Mughal](/source/Mughal_Empire) emperor [Akbar the Great](/source/Akbar_the_Great). The emperor, along with the council of his advisers, introduced the [Din-i-Ilahi](/source/Din-i-Ilahi) ("Divine Faith") a [syncretic](/source/Syncretic) religion intended to merge the best elements of the religions of his empire (primarily [Hinduism](/source/Hinduism) and [Islam](/source/Islam); elements were also taken from [Christianity](/source/Christianity), [Jainism](/source/Jainism), and [Zoroastrianism](/source/Zoroastrianism)) and thereby reconcile the sectarian differences that divided his subjects. Syed Shah Jamal fought against Akbar’s [Din-i-Ilahi](/source/Din-i-Ilahi)[2] and brought the people back to orthodox Islam.[3][4]

## Shrine

Jamal died in 1671. [His shrine](/source/Tomb_of_Shah_Jamal) is located near [Muslim Town](/source/Muslim_Town%2C_Lahore) in [Shah Jamal](/source/Shah_Jamal) [Lahore](/source/Lahore), opposite to [Forman Christian (FC) College](/source/Forman_Christian_College).[5] Festivities take place there every Thursday.[2] His [Urs](/source/Urs) is conducted annually on the 3rd, 4th, and 5th of [Rabi' al-Thani](/source/Rabi'_al-Thani),[3] and is attended by hundreds of thousands of devotees.[6] A characteristic part of the rituals was the late [Pappu Sain](/source/Pappu_Sain), who used to play the [dhol](/source/Dhol) at the shrine.[7]

His [Khalifa](/source/Khalifa) Akbar and Sajjada Nasheen [Gaddi Nasheen](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Gaddi_Nasheen&action=edit&redlink=1) is [Pir](/source/Pir_(Sufism)) Dr Syed Ali Hussain Shah Naqvi al [Bukhari](/source/Bukhari_(surname)) [Hussaini](/source/Hussaini). who is a descendant and the Trustee and successor of **Baba Shah Jamal** through the [Silsila tul Zahab](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Silsila_tul_Zahab&action=edit&redlink=1) ([Silsila-e-Zahab](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Silsila-e-Zahab&action=edit&redlink=1)) or Golden Chain. He holds regular [Khatam Khawajgan](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Khatam_Khawajgan&action=edit&redlink=1) and issues [Fatwas](/source/Fatwas).
