The '''BMW F series''' is a family of [parallel-twin engine](/source/Straight-twin_engine) [dual-sport](/source/Dual-sport_motorcycle) [motorcycle](/source/motorcycle)s manufactured in [Berlin](/source/Berlin), Germany by [BMW Motorrad](/source/BMW_Motorrad). Launched in 2008, the range comprises the ''' F650GS''', '''F700GS'', ''F800GS''', and '''F800GSA'''. In 2012, the F700GS replaced the discontinued F650GS, and in 2013, the F800GSA was introduced with a {{Convert|24|l|adj=on}} fuel tank and a larger front fairing and screen. The [F800GT](/source/BMW_F800GT) and [F800S](/source/BMW_F800S) both have belt drive.

==Models==

Contrary to industry convention, each model's "number" does not refer to the engine capacity. Instead, each bike in the F-series range uses essentially the same {{Convert|798|cc|abbr=on}} engine, but with different power outputs and equipment levels. The parallel-twin engine was first used in the [F800S](/source/BMW_F800S),<ref name=Telegraph>{{cite web | url= https://www.telegraph.co.uk/motoring/motorbikes/roadstermotorbikes/2750864/BMR-F800GS-Fixing-a-hole.html | title= BMW F800GS: Fixing a hole | first= Kevin | last= Ash |authorlink=Kevin Ash | publisher= [Daily Telegraph](/source/The_Daily_Telegraph) | date= 6 March 2008 | access-date= 26 January 2009| archive-url= https://web.archive.org/web/20090209195507/http://www.telegraph.co.uk/motoring/motorbikes/roadstermotorbikes/2750864/BMR-F800GS-Fixing-a-hole.html| archive-date= 9 February 2009 <!--DASHBot-->| url-status= dead}}</ref> and is also used in the [F800GT](/source/BMW_F800GT), [F800R](/source/BMW_F800R) and [F800ST](/source/BMW_F800ST), although these bikes are tuned to deliver peak power at a different RPM from the GS models. The GS models have longer suspension travel, needed for offroad use.<ref name=Omorogbe>{{cite web | url= http://cars.uk.msn.com/reviews/articles.aspx?cp-documentid=147873780 | title= Ridden: BMW F800GS and F650GS | publisher= [MSN](/source/MSN) | first= Jane | last= Omorogbe | authorlink= Jane Omorogbe | date= 3 April 2008 | accessdate= 26 January 2009 | archive-url= https://web.archive.org/web/20110723020608/http://cars.uk.msn.com/reviews/articles.aspx?cp-documentid=147873780 | archive-date= 23 July 2011 | url-status= dead }}</ref>

The F650GS name causes further confusion as it was previously used for a {{Convert|652|cc|abbr=on}} BMW bike fitted with a single-cylinder [Rotax](/source/Rotax) engine. It was produced from 2000 to 2007, then relaunched in 2009 as the [G650GS](/source/BMW_G650GS), fitted with a Chinese-assembled engine of the same 652 cc capacity.

All bike variants use the same basic engine. The F800 produces {{convert|85|hp|abbr=on}}, which is {{convert|10|hp|abbr=on}} more power than the F700 and {{convert|14|hp|abbr=on}} more than the discontinued F650. Engines on both the F800 and F700 can be modified to deliver a reduced power output of {{convert|35|kW|abbr=on}} for European riders on restricted Category A2 licences.<ref>{{cite web | url= https://www.gov.uk/ride-motorcycle-moped/bike-categories-ages-and-licence-requirements | publisher= GOV.UK | title= Riding a motorbike, moped or motor tricycle | accessdate= 23 March 2013}}</ref>

The F800 and F700 are fitted with twin [brake discs](/source/Disc_brake) on the front while the F650 was fitted with one disc.<ref name=Omorogbe/> Both bikes had [anti-lock brakes](/source/Anti-lock_braking_system) (ABS), which were optional on the F800 before 2013 models and all years of the F650.

Previously, only the F650 had the option of lowered suspension,<ref name=BMWPress /> which was not available on F800 models up to 2012. From 2013, both the F800 and F700 can be specified with a low seat and/or lowered suspension, the combination of which reduces seat height to {{convert|820|-|850|mm|abbr=on}} (F800) or {{convert|765|-|790|mm|abbr=on}} (F700), and makes the bikes suitable for shorter riders.
