The **Bucharest Exchange Trading Index** (**BET**) is a [stock market index](/source/Stock_market_index) that tracks the performance of the most [liquid](/source/Market_liquidity) stocks listed on the [Bucharest Stock Exchange](/source/Bucharest_Stock_Exchange) (BVB). It is the first and primary [benchmark](/source/Benchmark_(finance)) for the Romanian [capital market](/source/Capital_market).[4][3] The index is designed to serve as a performance and [transparency](/source/Transparency_(market)) benchmark and can be used as an [underlying asset](/source/Underlying_asset) for [derivatives](/source/Derivative_(finance)) and [structured products](/source/Structured_products).[4]

The BET index crossed the 20,000-point threshold for the first time in 2025, eventually closing the year at a historic high of 24,439, marking its strongest [annual growth rate](/source/Annual_growth_rate) since 2009.[5] The [total return index](/source/Total_return_index) version, [BET-TR](/source/BET-TR), has performed even more strongly.[6][7][8] Over the decade ending in 2025, the BET-TR index [compounded](/source/Compound_annual_growth_rate) significantly, placing it among the top best-performing global [equity indices](/source/Equity_(finance)), alongside the [Nasdaq-100](/source/Nasdaq-100) and [S&P 500](/source/S%26P_500).[6][7]

## History

The BET index was introduced on 19 September 1997, two years after the re-establishment of the [Bucharest Stock Exchange](/source/Bucharest_Stock_Exchange), with an initial value of 1,000 points.[4] It started with ten companies and a total [market capitalization](/source/Market_capitalization) of 443 million [Romanian lei](/source/Romanian_lei) (RON).[9] Over time, the number of constituents has varied between a minimum of 10 and a maximum of 20 companies, based on [liquidity](/source/Market_liquidity) and quality criteria.[4]

In 2015, the index [methodology](/source/Methodology) was enhanced to include qualitative criteria related to [transparency](/source/Transparency_(market)), reporting quality and [investor communication](/source/Investor_relations), in addition to the quantitative liquidity metrics.[4][10] Since its launch, 36 different [issuers](/source/Issuer) have been part of the BET index at various points in time.[9]

## Methodology

The BET index is a [free-float capitalization-weighted](/source/Capitalization-weighted_index#Free-float_weighting) [price index](/source/Price_index), calculated in real time during Bucharest Stock Exchange trading hours in [Romanian leu](/source/Romanian_leu) (RON).[4] [Euro](/source/Euro) and [U.S. dollars](/source/United_States_dollar) versions are published daily after the market close using [exchange rates](/source/Exchange_rate) from the [National Bank of Romania](/source/National_Bank_of_Romania).[4]

Each constituent weight is determined by two factors, the [free-float](/source/Free-float) factor and a [representation factor](/source/Capitalization-weighted_index#Capping) that caps any single company weight at 20% of the total index capitalisation to ensure [diversification](/source/Diversification_(finance)).[4] Unlike the [BET-TR](/source/BET-TR), the index is not adjusted for [dividends](/source/Dividend), but operational adjustments are made for [corporate events](/source/Corporate_action) such as [stock splits](/source/Stock_split), [consolidations](/source/Reverse_stock_split), and [capital increases](/source/Capital_increase) to maintain continuity and avoid artificial price [distortions](/source/Market_distortion).[4]
