BESIX Watpac was founded by Gregory Watkins in [Brisbane](/source/Brisbane), [Queensland](/source/Queensland) as '''Watkins Pacific''' in 1983. It was listed on the [Australian Securities Exchange](/source/Australian_Securities_Exchange) as '''Watpac''' in 1985. During the 1980s and 1990s, it acquired a businesses in [Mackay](/source/Mackay%2C_Queensland) and opened offices on the [Gold Coast](/source/Gold_Coast%2C_Queensland) and in [Townsville](/source/Townsville), [Cairns](/source/Cairns) and [Canberra](/source/Canberra). In 2004 Watpac purchased Grant Constructions, giving it a [New South Wales](/source/New_South_Wales) presence. In 2007 it purchased [Melbourne](/source/Melbourne) based JA Dodd.
