'''Spliceosome RNA helicase BAT1''' is an [enzyme](/source/enzyme) that in humans is encoded by the ''BAT1'' [gene](/source/gene).<ref name="pmid7601445">{{cite journal | vauthors = Peelman LJ, Chardon P, Nunes M, Renard C, Geffrotin C, Vaiman M, Van Zeveren A, Coppieters W, van de Weghe A, Bouquet Y | title = The BAT1 gene in the MHC encodes an evolutionarily conserved putative nuclear RNA helicase of the DEAD family | journal = Genomics | volume = 26 | issue = 2 | pages = 210–8 |date=Aug 1995 | pmid = 7601445 | doi =10.1016/0888-7543(95)80203-X |display-authors=etal}}</ref><ref name="pmid2813433">{{cite journal | vauthors = Spies T, Bresnahan M, Strominger JL | title = Human major histocompatibility complex contains a minimum of 19 genes between the complement cluster and HLA-B | journal = Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A | volume = 86 | issue = 22 | pages = 8955–8 |date=Dec 1989 | pmid = 2813433 | pmc = 298409 | doi =10.1073/pnas.86.22.8955 | bibcode = 1989PNAS...86.8955S | doi-access = free }}</ref><ref name="entrez">{{cite web | title = Entrez Gene: BAT1 HLA-B associated transcript 1| url = https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/gene?Db=gene&Cmd=ShowDetailView&TermToSearch=7919}}</ref>

This gene encodes a member of the [DEAD box](/source/DEAD_box) family of RNA-dependent [ATPases](/source/ATPases) that mediate [ATP hydrolysis](/source/ATP_hydrolysis) during [pre-mRNA splicing](/source/RNA_splicing). The encoded protein is an essential [splicing factor](/source/splicing_factor) required for association of U2 small nuclear [ribonucleoprotein](/source/ribonucleoprotein) with [pre-mRNA](/source/pre-mRNA), and also plays an important role in [mRNA](/source/mRNA) export from the nucleus to the [cytoplasm](/source/cytoplasm). A cluster of genes, BAT1-BAT5, is localized in the vicinity of the genes for [TNF alpha](/source/TNF_alpha) and [TNF beta](/source/Lymphotoxin_alpha). These genes are all within the human [major histocompatibility complex class III](/source/Major_histocompatibility_complex) region. [Mutations](/source/Mutations) in this gene may be associated with [rheumatoid arthritis](/source/rheumatoid_arthritis). Alternatively spliced [transcript variants](/source/transcript_variants) encoding the same protein have been described.<ref name="entrez" />
