The '''BANA test''' (referring to the [enzymatic](/source/enzyme) [breakdown](/source/chemical_breakdown) of ''N''-benzoyl-{{smallcaps|dl}}-arginine-2-napthylamide) is used to determine the [proteolytic activity](/source/proteolysis) of certain oral [anaerobe](/source/anaerobe)s that contribute to [oral malodor](/source/halitosis). Some [bacteria](/source/bacterium), e.g. Prophyromona gingivalis, [Treponema denticola](/source/Treponema_denticola), and [Bacteroides forsythus](/source/Tannerella_forsythia) (Red complex) produce waste products that are quite odiferous, and as a result contribute to bad breath.<ref>{{Cite journal|pmc = 4555797|year = 2015|last1 = Dhalla|first1 = N|title = The detection of BANA micro-organisms in adult periodontitis before and after scaling and root planing by BANA-Enzymatic™ test kit: An in vivo study|journal = Journal of Indian Society of Periodontology|volume = 19|issue = 4|pages = 401–405|last2 = Patil|first2 = S|last3 = Chaubey|first3 = K. When a sample of a [patient's](/source/patient) [saliva](/source/saliva) that contains these bacteria is placed within the BANA testing compound, it causes the breakdown of the N-benzoyl enzyme. As a result of this [biodegradation](/source/biodegradation) occurs, the test compound changes color, indicating a positive reaction.<ref>{{cite book|title=Periodontis Revisited |url=https://books.google.com/books?id=NKe1zjbxpvQC&q=placed+within+the+BANA+testing+compound%2C+it+causes+the+breakdown+of+the+N-benzoyl&pg=PA241 |year=2011 |page=242 |isbn=978-93-5025-367-0|last1=Bathla |first1=Shalu | publisher=JP Medical }}</ref>

Uses: Used to identify volatile Sulphur compounds in halitosis patients.
