**B.G. Sports Club** (commonly known as **BG Sports**, or simply as **BG**) is a multi-sports organization based in [Maafannu](/source/Maafannu), [Malé](/source/Mal%C3%A9), [Maldives](/source/Maldives). It is best known for its football team which currently competes in the [Maldivian Second Division Football Tournament](/source/Maldivian_Second_Division_Football_Tournament).

Founded in 1996, BG Sports is also regarded as the most successful Baibalaa clubs in the country.[1]

## History

### Formation and early years (1996–2010)

BG Sports Club was established in 1996 by a group of neighbours in [Maafannu](/source/Maafannu),[2][3] originally to participate in the traditional Maldivian sport Baibalaa. Later that year itself the club board quickly decided to expanded into other sports, including [football](/source/Association_football), [basketball](/source/Basketball), [athletics](/source/Sport_of_athletics), [swimming](/source/Swimming_(sport)), [netball](/source/Netball), [cricket](/source/Cricket) and more.

### Rise to national football prominence (2011–2013)

BG Sports entered competitive football and rose through the lower divisions. In 2011, the club finished runner-up in the [Third Division](/source/Maldivian_Third_Division_Football_Tournament), losing the [final](/source/2011_Third_Division_Football_Tournament#Final) to [Club Zefrol](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Club_Zefrol&action=edit&redlink=1) on penalties, but still gained promotion to the [Second Division](/source/Maldivian_Second_Division_Football_Tournament).[4]

The following year, BG Sports became [2012 Second Division](/source/2012_Maldivian_Second_Division_Football_Tournament) champions,[5][6] defeating [United Victory](/source/United_Victory) 8–0 in the final — their biggest recorded win — and earned promotion[7] to the [First Division](/source/Dhivehi_League) for the first time in their history.

In the [2013 Dhivehi League](/source/2013_Dhivehi_League), BG Sports signed several high-profile players and finished third,[8] qualifying for the [President’s Cup](/source/President's_Cup_(Maldives)) for the first time. They were eliminated in the [semi-final](/source/2013_President's_Cup_(Maldives)#Semi-final) after a narrow 2–1 loss to [Maziya](/source/Maziya_S%26RC).[9]

### Top-flight struggles and survival (2014–2016)

During the [2014 Dhivehi League](/source/2014_Dhivehi_League), BG Sports managed only one win from 14 matches, finishing at the bottom.[10] However, avoiding relegation by winning all three matches in the [play-offs](/source/2014_Dhivehi_League#Promotion/relegation_playoff_for_2015_Dhivehi_League).[11][12]

In 2015, when the Maldives top division was rebranded as the [Dhivehi Premier League](/source/Dhivehi_Premier_League), BG Sports became one of the eight founding clubs.[3] They finished [7th](/source/2015_Dhivehi_Premier_League), entering another [relegation play-off](/source/2015_Dhivehi_Premier_League#2016_Dhivehi_Premier_League_play-off).[13][14] BG defeated [Club Green Streets](/source/Club_Green_Streets) 4–1 in the first leg, and after Green Streets failed to appear for the second leg, BG retained their top-flight status.[15]

The following season, BG Sports finished bottom of the [Premier League](/source/2016_Dhivehi_Premier_League), with just 3 wins from 21 matches, resulting in relegation to the [Second Division](/source/Maldivian_Second_Division_Football_Tournament).[16][17]

### Recent years (2017–present)

Between 2017 and 2020, BG Sports endured difficult campaigns in the [Second Division](/source/Maldivian_Second_Division_Football_Tournament), failing to win a single group-stage match across three seasons. In [2022](/source/2022_Maldivian_Second_Division_Football_Tournament), they recorded their first competitive win after five years[18] but did not progress beyond the group stage. During the [2023–24 Second Division](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=2023%E2%80%9324_Maldivian_Second_Division_Football_Tournament&action=edit&redlink=1), BG Sports advanced to the quarter-finals before being eliminated 5–0 by eventual champions [Masodi Sports Club](/source/Masodi_Sports_Club).[19]
