The **azure dollarbird** (***Eurystomus azureus***) also known as the **azure roller**, **purple dollarbird** or **purple roller**, is a species of [bird](/source/Bird) in the family [Coraciidae](/source/Coraciidae). It is [endemic](/source/Endemism) to [North Maluku](/source/North_Maluku) in Indonesia. Formerly, some authorities considered the azure dollarbird to be a subspecies of the [oriental dollarbird](/source/Oriental_dollarbird).

A [molecular phylogenetic](/source/Molecular_phylogenetic) study by Ulf Johansson and collaborators published in 2018 found that the azure dollarbird was nested in a [clade](/source/Clade) containing [subspecies](/source/Subspecies) of the [Oriental dollarbird](/source/Oriental_dollarbird) (*Eurystomus orientalis*).[1]

## Habitat

The azure dollarbird's natural [habitats](/source/Habitat) are [subtropical or tropical moist lowland forest](/source/Subtropical_or_tropical_moist_lowland_forest) and [plantations](/source/Plantation). It is negatively affected by [habitat loss](/source/Habitat_loss). For some time, it was assumed to be decreasing in numbers quite rapidly and it was uplisted to Vulnerable in the 2000 [IUCN Red List](/source/IUCN_Red_List). However, more recently it was determined to be, although still declining, more common than previously believed, and thus it was downlisted to Near Threatened in 2007.[2]
