'''Aztatlán''' is a pre-Hispanic culture and trade tradition in [Mesoamerica](/source/Mesoamerica) that occurred during the [Post-classic period](/source/Mesoamerican_chronology), from around AD 850 to 1350+. The Aztatlán region spanned the modern Mexican states of [Sinaloa](/source/Sinaloa), [Nayarit](/source/Nayarit), and [Jalisco](/source/Jalisco) as well as some portions of [Durango](/source/Durango), [Zacatecas](/source/Zacatecas), and [Michoacán](/source/Michoac%C3%A1n). Elites living in the coastal and highland began having marriage alliances which facilitated the trade of prestige goods between the two areas. Colorful feathers, cacao, cotton, obsidian, and maguey-fiber were commonly traded.<ref>{{Cite journal |last=Mathiowetz |first=Michael D. |date=2019 |title=A History of Cacao in West Mexico: Implications for Mesoamerica and U.S. Southwest Connections |url=https://www.researchgate.net/publication/327560491 |journal=Journal of Archaeological Research |volume=27 |issue=3 |pages=287–333 |doi=10.1007/s10814-018-9125-7 |s2cid=150164470 |via=ResearchGate}}</ref>

There
is some confusion as to if Aztatlán represents the mythical [Aztlán](/source/Aztl%C3%A1n), but without any evidence, there is no scientific basis to associate these two words. One is used for scholarly studies about a specific culture, one as a mystical place of origin. Aztatlán-style archeological artifacts dated to 900 AD were discovered in 2022 around [Mazatlán](/source/Mazatl%C3%A1n) 'place of deer'.<ref>{{Cite web|url=https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/en-espanol/cultura/articulo/2022-05-28/mexico-descubre-sitio-prehispanico-de-cultura-aztatlan-en-urbe-de-sinaloa|title=México descubre sitio prehispánico de cultura Aztatlán en urbe de Sinaloa|date=29 May 2022|website=[San Diego Union-Tribune](/source/San_Diego_Union-Tribune) en Español|access-date=4 June 2022}}</ref>
