Born to a large family, he received his primary education at [Greenland College](/source/Isipathana_Vidyalaya) and secondary education at the [Royal College, Colombo](/source/Royal_College%2C_Colombo). In 1971 he gained admission to the [University of Ceylon, Colombo](/source/University_of_Ceylon%2C_Colombo) and graduated with a [BSc](/source/BSc) first class Honours Degree in Chemistry. During his time at the university he captained the university cricket and soccer teams and was a member of the hockey and badminton teams.{{citation needed|date=August 2020}}

Briefly playing cricket for the [Moors Sports Club](/source/Moors_Sports_Club), he won the [Commonwealth Scholarship](/source/Commonwealth_Scholarship) to do his [PhD](/source/PhD) at the [University of Cambridge](/source/University_of_Cambridge) from 1976 to 1980. There he played [First-class cricket](/source/First-class_cricket) for the Cambridge University cricket team<ref>{{Cite web |url=https://cricketarchive.com/Archive/Players/31/31607/31607.html |title=Aziz Mubarak |website=CricketArchive |url-access=subscription|access-date=15 January 2018}}</ref> and won blues for cricket. He is a Rotarian and a Past President of the Colombo South Rotary Club. He is married to Chitranganie (née De Silva), former Chairperson of Information and Communication Technology Agency (ICTA) and has a son and daughter. His son [Jehan Mubarak](/source/Jehan_Mubarak) has played cricket for Sri Lanka in all formats of the game. His daughter Kamakshi currently works for the World Bank in Washington DC.{{citation needed|date=August 2020}}
