The **Aylesbury Vale** (or **Vale of Aylesbury**) is a geographical region in [Buckinghamshire](/source/Buckinghamshire), England, covering the predominantly rural area between [Milton Keynes](/source/Milton_Keynes) and [the Chilterns](/source/Chiltern_Hills). It is named after its main town, Aylesbury, the [county town](/source/County_town) of Buckinghamshire. Other key settlements in the region include [Winslow](/source/Winslow%2C_Buckinghamshire) and [Buckingham](/source/Buckingham).

The bed of the vale is largely made up of clay that was formed at the end of the [last ice age](/source/Last_ice_age).

Before 2020, there was a [local government district](/source/Districts_of_England) known as Aylesbury Vale. It was succeeded by the [unitary district of Buckinghamshire](/source/Buckinghamshire_(district)) during [local government restructuring in 2020](/source/2019%E2%80%932023_structural_changes_to_local_government_in_England).

In the [2020 census](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=2020_United_Kingdom_census&action=edit&redlink=1), the population of Aylesbury Vale was 205,426.[*[citation needed](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)*] In the [2001 census](/source/2011_United_Kingdom_census), the population of Aylesbury Vale was 165,748, representing an increase since 1991 of 18,600 people.[1] About half of those live in Aylesbury.

## Government

Aylesbury Vale was administered as a [local government district](/source/Non-metropolitan_district) of northern Buckinghamshire, with its own district council between 1974 and 2020. The council's offices were in Aylesbury. The district council's logo included the historical figure of [John Hampden](/source/John_Hampden).[2] The district was formed on 1 April 1974 by the merger of the boroughs of [Aylesbury](/source/Municipal_Borough_of_Aylesbury) and [Buckingham](/source/Municipal_Borough_of_Buckingham), [Aylesbury Rural District](/source/Aylesbury_Rural_District), [Buckingham Rural District](/source/Buckingham_Rural_District), [Wing Rural District](/source/Wing_Rural_District) and part of [Winslow Rural District](/source/Winslow_Rural_District). Aylesbury Vale was absorbed into the new unitary [Buckinghamshire Council](/source/Buckinghamshire_Council) on 1 April 2020.

There are 111 civil parishes in the area of the former non-metropolitan district: 84 with a parish council, including three town councils ([Aylesbury](/source/Aylesbury), [Buckingham](/source/Buckingham) and [Winslow](/source/Winslow%2C_Buckinghamshire)), and a further 27 operating with a Parish meeting, see [list of civil parishes in Aylesbury Vale](/source/List_of_civil_parishes_in_Buckinghamshire).

## Literature

The Aylesbury Vale countryside is described in the English novel [The War Hero](/source/The_War_Hero).[3]

## Tourism

The Vale has a number of historic buildings and landscapes which are tourist attractions. The [National Trust](/source/National_Trust_for_Places_of_Historic_Interest_or_Natural_Beauty) owns several properties including [Waddesdon Manor](/source/Waddesdon_Manor), [Claydon House](/source/Claydon_House) and the landscaped gardens at [Stowe House](/source/Stowe_House). The [Silverstone Circuit](/source/Silverstone_Circuit) sits on the northern boundary of the Vale with [South Northamptonshire](/source/South_Northamptonshire), and the [Buckinghamshire Railway Centre](/source/Buckinghamshire_Railway_Centre) is located near [Quainton](/source/Quainton). Aylesbury is home to the [County Museum](/source/Buckinghamshire_County_Museum) (which includes the [Roald Dahl Children's Gallery](/source/Roald_Dahl_Children's_Gallery)), and Buckingham features the [Old Gaol Museum](/source/Buckingham_Old_Gaol).

## Transport

There are no motorway junctions in the Vale although the [M40](/source/M40_motorway) does cross it for five miles between junctions 8A and 9. The [A41 road](/source/A41_road), the [A413 road](/source/A413_road) and the [A418 road](/source/A418_road) meet at Aylesbury. The [A421 road](/source/A421_road) passes through the north of the Vale providing connections to [Milton Keynes](/source/Milton_Keynes), [Bedford](/source/Bedford) and the M1 to the east, and the M40, [Oxford](/source/Oxford) and [Birmingham](/source/Birmingham) to the west.

The Vale is served by rail connections to the capital, containing several railway stations on the [London to Aylesbury Line](/source/London_to_Aylesbury_Line) – the major station being [Aylesbury](/source/Aylesbury_railway_station). At Aylesbury there are connecting services to [Princes Risborough](/source/Princes_Risborough_railway_station). In addition, the [Chiltern Main Line](/source/Chiltern_Main_Line) passes through the district, stopping at [Haddenham & Thame Parkway](/source/Haddenham_%26_Thame_Parkway_railway_station). The [West Coast Main Line](/source/West_Coast_Main_Line) passes through the Vale twice along its eastern borders, with national intercity services stopping at nearby [Milton Keynes Central](/source/Milton_Keynes_Central_railway_station) which, with [Bletchley](/source/Bletchley_railway_station), is also served by regional services.

As of 2023, construction work is underway on two further rail lines across the Vale, [High Speed 2](/source/High_Speed_2) (HS2) and [East West Rail](/source/East_West_Rail) (EWR). The HS2 route runs north-west, largely following the former [Great Central Main Line](/source/Great_Central_Main_Line) route, but without providing any services to any towns in the county. EWR runs across the Vale, with trains between [Oxford](/source/Oxford_railway_station) and Milton Keynes Central, calling at [Winslow](/source/Winslow_railway_station) and [Bletchley](/source/Bletchley_railway_station), due to commence in early 2025.[4] Buckinghamshire Council has established a cycleway between Buckingham and Winslow to maximise use of the new station.[5]

There are also proposals for a branch line from East West Rail, to run from [Claydon LNE Junction](/source/Claydon_LNE_Junction) via [Aylesbury Vale Parkway](/source/Aylesbury_Vale_Parkway_railway_station) to Aylesbury, which were discussed in Parliament in 2021.[6] This proposal remains "under review" and is not in any current plans. (The route of HS2 uses the same corridor and, as of August 2023[\[update\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Aylesbury_Vale&action=edit), the Claydon line is needed to move materials for its engineering works.)
