**Aykhal** (Russian: Айха́л; sah: Айхал, *Ayxal*) is an [urban locality](/source/Types_of_inhabited_localities_in_Russia) (an [urban-type settlement](/source/Urban-type_settlement)) in [Mirninsky District](/source/Mirninsky_District) of the [Sakha Republic](/source/Sakha_Republic), [Russia](/source/Russia), located 469 kilometers (291 mi) from [Mirny](/source/Mirny,_Sakha_Republic), the [administrative center](/source/Administrative_center) of the district,[5] in the [basin](/source/Drainage_basin) of the [Vilyuy River](/source/Vilyuy_River). As of the [2010 Census](/source/Russian_Census_(2010)), its population was 13,727.[1]

## Etymology

The name derives from the [Yakut](/source/Yakut_language) word for *fame*.[citation needed]

## Geography

[Sokhsolookh](/source/Sokhsolookh) stream is located in the Aykhal's vicinity. The name of the stream in the [Yakut language](/source/Yakut_language) means *the river of death* or *the river of traps*, in reference to a large number of [reindeer](/source/Reindeer) who, according to local legend, have drowned while trying to cross the river ice.

## History

It was founded in 1961 with the beginnings of diamond extraction from the [kimberlite pipe](/source/Volcanic_pipe) found here.[citation needed] It was granted [urban-type settlement](/source/Urban-type_settlement) status in the following year.[5] In 1985, Yubileynaya diamond mine was opened 20 kilometers (12 mi) from Aykhal.

## Administrative and municipal status

Within the [framework of administrative divisions](/source/Subdivisions_of_Russia#Administrative_divisions), the [urban-type settlement](/source/Urban-type_settlement#Inhabited_localities) of Aykhal,[6] together with one [rural locality](/source/Types_of_inhabited_localities_in_Russia) (the *[selo](/source/Village#Russia)* of [Morkoka](/source/Morkoka)), is incorporated within [Mirninsky District](/source/Mirninsky_District) as the **[Settlement](/source/Urban-type_settlement#Administrative_divisions) of Aykhal**.[5] As a [municipal division](/source/Subdivisions_of_Russia#Municipal_divisions), the Settlement of Aykhal is incorporated within Mirninsky Municipal District as **Aykhal Urban Settlement**.[7]

## Economy and infrastructure

The local economy is reliant on diamond mining conducted by [ALROSA](/source/ALROSA) at its [Aykhal](/source/Aikhal_diamond_mine) and [Yubileynaya mines](/source/Yubileynaya_diamond_mine). It is served by the [Aykhal Airport](/source/Aykhal_Airport).
