Henry was born in [Lincoln, Lincolnshire](/source/Lincoln%2C_Lincolnshire) to [Royal Air Force](/source/Royal_Air_Force) officer Robert Charles Henry and Eileen Florence Whattam Henry.{{Citation needed|date=April 2025}}

Henry worked as a professor of English [medieval](/source/medieval) culture at the [University of Exeter](/source/University_of_Exeter). She researched the theory of [typology](/source/Typology_(theology)).

Henry campaigned for the legalisation of voluntary [euthanasia](/source/euthanasia). She died by [suicide](/source/suicide) at her home in [Brampford Speke](/source/Brampford_Speke), [Devon](/source/Devon), near [Exeter](/source/Exeter), on 20 April 2016, aged 81.
