**Avontuur** is a town situated in the [Garden Route District Municipality](/source/Garden_Route_District_Municipality) in the [Western Cape](/source/Western_Cape) province of [South Africa](/source/South_Africa).[2] The town is located 13 km south-east of [Uniondale](/source/Uniondale%2C_Western_Cape) on an intersection of the [R339](/source/R339_road_(South_Africa)) and [R62](/source/R62_road_(South_Africa)) regional routes.

## History

The name is Afrikaans for *adventure*; its origin, however, remains uncertain. The river from which the town takes its name was known in 1778.[3]
