The company was founded in 1991 based on the history of the [Call Aircraft Company](/source/Call_Aircraft_Company) and the product lines of the Pitts and [Christen](/source/Christen_Industries) companies.<ref>{{cite news |title=Makers of Pitts Special Sell Interests |url=http://www.newspapers.com/newspage/349572708 |access-date=27 October 2020 |work=Casper Star-Tribune |date=13 June 1991 |page=A11}}</ref><ref>{{cite news |last1=Ifland |first1=Jane |title=Can You Not Keep a Secret? |url=http://www.newspapers.com/newspage/349935745 |access-date=27 October 2020 |work=Casper Star-Tribune |date=20 July 1991 |page=37}}</ref> In 1995, the company was purchased by Stuart Horn and renamed '''Aviat Aircraft Incorporated'''.<ref>{{cite web |title=Aviat Aircraft History |url=http://aviataircraft.com/aviat-aircraft-history |website=Aviat Aircraft |access-date=26 October 2020}}</ref><ref>{{cite news |last1=Kohlman |first1=Matt |title=Pitts Planes Loop the Loop |url=http://www.newspapers.com/newspage/446623327 |access-date=26 October 2020 |work=Santa Maria Times |agency=Associated Press |date=1 January 1996 |page=C-5}}</ref>

In 1999, Aviat purchased the rights to the [Globe Swift](/source/Globe_Swift) with the intent on bringing the example back into production. A lawsuit between LoPresti's use of the design for the [LoPresti Fury](/source/LoPresti_Fury) delayed entry of both aircraft from the market.<ref>{{cite magazine|magazine=Flying Magazine|date=September 1999|page=32|title=Lopresti Countersues Aviat Over Swift}}</ref>

The company also produces the [Aviat 150](/source/Aviat_150) and [Aviat 152](/source/Aviat_152). These are overhauled, rebuilt and painted [Cessna 150](/source/Cessna_150) and [Cessna 152](/source/Cessna_152)s.<ref name="Aviat152">{{cite web|url= https://aviataircraft.com/152-reimagined/|title= 152 Reimagined|access-date= 28 May 2021|author= Aviat Aircraft|author-link= Aviat|work= aviataircraft.com|year= 2021|archive-url= https://web.archive.org/web/20210506180147/https://aviataircraft.com/152-reimagined/|archive-date= 6 May 2021|url-status= live}}</ref>
