**Avian Island** is an [island](/source/Island), 1.2 km (0.7 mi) long and 40 metres (130 ft) high, lying close off the south tip of [Adelaide Island](/source/Adelaide_Island), [Antarctica](/source/Antarctica). It was discovered by the [French Antarctic Expedition](/source/French_Antarctic_Expedition), 1908–10, under [Jean-Baptiste Charcot](/source/Jean-Baptiste_Charcot), and visited in 1948 by the [Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey](/source/Falkland_Islands_Dependencies_Survey), who so named it because of the large number and variety of birds ([avians](/source/Avians)) found there.

## Birds

The island has been identified as an [Important Bird Area](/source/Important_Bird_Area) by [BirdLife International](/source/BirdLife_International) because it supports a large [breeding colony](/source/Bird_colony) of [Adélie penguins](/source/Ad%C3%A9lie_penguin) (35,000 pairs), as well as [imperial shags](/source/Imperial_shag) (670 pairs), [south polar skuas](/source/South_polar_skua) (880 pairs), [southern giant petrels](/source/Southern_giant_petrel) (250 pairs), [kelp gulls](/source/Kelp_gull) and [Wilson's storm petrels](/source/Wilson's_storm_petrel). It also holds the southernmost record of breeding [brown skuas](/source/Brown_skua).[1] The island is protected as [Antarctic Specially Protected Area](/source/Antarctic_Specially_Protected_Area) (ASPA) No.117 for its outstanding ornithological significance.[2]

## Skeen Rocks

To the south are **Skeen Rocks**, ([67°47′S 68°54′W / 67.783°S 68.900°W / -67.783; -68.900](https://geohack.toolforge.org/geohack.php?pagename=Avian_Island&params=67_47_S_68_54_W_)), two rocks which were named by the [United Kingdom Antarctic Place-Names Committee](/source/United_Kingdom_Antarctic_Place-Names_Committee) (UK-APC) for Lieutenant [Michael G.C. Skeen](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Michael_G.C._Skeen&action=edit&redlink=1), [Royal Navy](/source/Royal_Navy), officer in charge of the helicopter flight, HMS charting this area in 1961–63.[3]
