'''Aveyron''' ({{IPA|fr|avɛʁɔ̃|lang|Fr-Aveyron-fr FR-Paris.ogg}}; {{langx|oc|Avairon}} {{IPA|oc|aβajˈɾu|}}) is a [department](/source/Departments_of_France) in the [region](/source/Regions_of_France) of [Occitania](/source/Occitania_(administrative_region)), [Southern France](/source/Southern_France). It was named after the river [Aveyron](/source/Aveyron_(river)). Its inhabitants are known as ''Aveyronnais'' (masculine) or ''Aveyronnaises'' (feminine) in French.<ref>{{Cite web|url=https://www.habitants.fr/index.php|title=Le nom des habitants des communes de France - Habitants|website=www.habitants.fr}}</ref> The inhabitants of Aveyron's [prefecture](/source/Prefectures_in_France), [Rodez](/source/Rodez), are called ''Ruthénois'', based upon the first settlers in the area, the [Ruteni](/source/Ruteni). With an area of {{convert|8,735|km2}} and a population of 279,609 (2023),<ref name="pophist" /> Aveyron is a largely rural department with a population density of {{convert|32|/km2|/mi2|disp=preunit|people|people|abbr=on}}.

==History==
[[File:Ruteni coin 5th 1st century BCE.jpg|thumb|left|upright|[Ruteni](/source/Ruteni) coin, 5th–1st century BCE]]
Aveyron is one of the [original 83 departments](/source/Departments_of_France) created during the [French Revolution](/source/French_Revolution) on 4 March 1790. The earliest known inhabitants of the region were the [Rutenii](/source/Rutenii) tribe, though the area was inhabited prior to their tenure. The department has many prehistoric monuments, including over a thousand [dolmen](/source/dolmen)s, the most of any department in France.

thumb|left|upright|Victor of Aveyron in 1800
During the medieval and early modern periods, and until the 1790s, the territory included within Aveyron was a [province](/source/Provinces_of_France) known as [Rouergue](/source/Rouergue). In 1797, [Victor of Aveyron](/source/Victor_of_Aveyron) (a [feral child](/source/feral_child)) was found wandering the woods in the area. The story of Victor is told in the film ''[The Wild Child](/source/The_Wild_Child)''.

In 1817, a local prosecutor, [Antoine Bernardin Fualdès](/source/Antoine_Bernardin_Fuald%C3%A8s), was assassinated. The sordid circumstances of his death, following which his body was found floating in the river Aveyron, led to the matter becoming publicised as a ''cause célèbre''. Recent studies have indicated that he met his end at the initiative of a right-wing royalist organisation known as the ''Chevaliers de la Foi'' (Knights of Faith).<ref>{{Cite book |last=Irving |first=Henry Brodribb |url=https://books.google.com/books?id=uaIVAAAAYAAJ |title=Occasional Papers Dramatic and Historical |publisher=Bickers and Sons |year=1906 |location=London |pages=185–227}}</ref>

== Geography ==
Aveyron is the centre of a triangle formed by the cities of [Toulouse](/source/Toulouse), [Clermont-Ferrand](/source/Clermont-Ferrand), and [Montpellier](/source/Montpellier). The department approximately follows the outline of the former province of [Rouergue](/source/Rouergue). It is the 5th largest department in metropolitan France in terms of area ({{convert|8735|km2|0|abbr=on}}). Its prefecture is [Rodez](/source/Rodez).

The department comes under the jurisdiction of the [Academy of Toulouse](/source/Academy_of_Toulouse) and the Montpellier [Court of Appeal](/source/Court_of_Appeal_(France)). The [INSEE](/source/Institut_national_de_la_statistique_et_des_%C3%A9tudes_%C3%A9conomiques) and Post Code is 12. Aveyron is located in the south of the [Massif Central](/source/Massif_Central). The highest point in the department is the summit of the ''[Signal de Mailhebiau](/source/Signal_de_Mailhebiau)'' at 1469m on the Plateau of [Aubrac](/source/Aubrac). The Aveyron department is divided into several natural regions such as the Grand Causses and Rougiers.

Aveyron department consists of an ancient high rocky plateau of great geological diversity. The [Truyère](/source/Truy%C3%A8re), [Lot](/source/Lot_(river)), [Aveyron](/source/Aveyron_(river)), and [Tarn](/source/Tarn_(river)) rivers have carved a number of deep gorges. The department is surrounded by those of [Tarn](/source/Tarn_(department)), [Tarn-et-Garonne](/source/Tarn-et-Garonne), [Lot](/source/Lot_(department)), [Hérault](/source/H%C3%A9rault), [Gard](/source/Gard), [Lozère](/source/Loz%C3%A8re) and [Cantal](/source/Cantal). The [Lac de Villefranche-de-Panat](/source/Lac_de_Villefranche-de-Panat) is used as a reservoir to provide drinking water supplies for the region.

===Regional sub-dialect===
The regional sub-dialect spoken in Aveyron is a form of [Languedoc](/source/Languedoc) [Occitan](/source/Occitan_language) called ''Rouergat''. Faced with the risk of disappearance of the language several associations asked the State and political communities for an ambitious language policy.<ref>[http://www.ladepeche.fr/article/2009/10/24/701002-Occitan-Les-langues-regionales-sont-rangees-aux-oubliettes.html Article in ''La Dépêche.fr'' on 24 October 2009] consulted on 29 December 2009 {{in lang|fr}}</ref>
In Rouergat, ''Aveyron'' is written:
*''Avairon'' (traditional Occitan spelling) – e.g. "Roergue forma lo despartament de l'Avairon"
*Oboyróu (spelling of Father Vayssier) – e.g. "Rouergue fouórmo lou desportomén de l'Oboyróu"

== Tourism ==
