**Autosexuality** is a [sexual orientation](/source/Sexual_orientation) on the [asexual spectrum](/source/Asexual_spectrum)[1] defined as [sexual attraction](/source/Sexual_attraction) primarily to [oneself](/source/Self).[2][3][4][5] [Autoromantic](/source/Autoromantic) is the romantic equivalent.[2]

## Research

Autosexuality has not been widely studied.[2] It is not to be confused with narcissism or [narcissistic personality disorder](/source/Narcissistic_personality_disorder),[4] which, according to the [National Library of Medicine](/source/National_Library_of_Medicine), may be associated with factors such as genetic predisposition, rejection, or excessive praise.[2][6]

It is also not to be confused with [autoeroticism](/source/Autoeroticism), as autosexuality is considered a sexual orientation, while autoeroticism is not.[2]

According to clinical [sexologist](/source/Sexologist) and sex and relationships [therapist](/source/Therapist) Cyndi Darnell, “For folks who identify as autosexual, the current definition and understanding is that they are people who prefer solo erotic practice, solo pleasure practice, or self-touch practices—such as [masturbation](/source/Masturbation)—over partnered sexual activities”.[7]

Autosexuality was also discussed on the talk show *[The View](/source/The_View)*.[8]
