{{Short description|5th-century BC Athenian poet and comic playwright}}
{{For|the genus of beetles|Autocrates (beetle)}}

'''Autocrates''' ({{langx|grc|Αὐτοκράτης}}) was an [Ancient Athenian](/source/Classical_Athens) [poet](/source/poet) of the [old comedy](/source/old_comedy). One of his plays is mentioned by the ''[Suda](/source/Suda)'' and [Aelian](/source/Claudius_Aelianus).<ref>V. H. xii. 9.(cited in ''Smith'')</ref> He also wrote several [tragedies](/source/tragedy).<ref>''Suda''. (cited in ''Smith'')</ref>

The Autocrates quoted by [Athenaeus](/source/Athenaeus)<ref>ix. p. 395 and xi. p. 460 (cited in ''Smith'')</ref> seems to have been a different person.
