***Austroplaca hookeri*** is a species of [saxicolous](/source/Saxicolous_lichen) (rock-dwelling), [crustose lichen](/source/Crustose_lichen) in the family [Teloschistaceae](/source/Teloschistaceae).[1] It was originally [described](/source/Species_description) by [Carroll William Dodge](/source/Carroll_William_Dodge) in 1965, as *Gasparrinia hookeri*. The [type specimen](/source/Type_(biology)) was originally collected by British botanist and explorer [Joseph Dalton Hooker](/source/Joseph_Dalton_Hooker) on [Cockburn Island](/source/Cockburn_Island_(Antarctica)); the species is named in his honour.[2] The [taxon](/source/Taxon) was transferred to the large genus *[Caloplaca](/source/Caloplaca)* in 2004,[3] and again to the genus *Austroplaca* in 2013 as part of a restructuring of the family Teloschistaceae.[4]

The lichen forms [rosettes](/source/Rosette_(botany)) up to 2.5 cm (1 in) in diameter. Its [thallus](/source/Thallus) is typically orange, although the colour is yellow in shaded areas. The at the margins of the thallus are up to 1.5 mm long and 0.5 mm wide.[2] *Austroplaca hookeri* occurs on rocky seashores of the [Antarctic Peninsula](/source/Antarctic_Peninsula), [Falkland Islands](/source/Falkland_Islands), and [South Shetland Islands](/source/South_Shetland_Islands) in maritime Antarctica.[5]
