{{Short description|Austrian Christian religious organisation}}
The '''Austrian Congregation''' is a congregation of [Benedictine](/source/Order_of_St._Benedict) monasteries situated in [Austria](/source/Austria), within the [Benedictine Confederation](/source/Benedictine_Confederation).

==History==
The Congregation was founded on 3 August 1625 by [Pope Urban VIII](/source/Pope_Urban_VIII), and consisted of eleven Benedictine monasteries in Austria:
*[Altenburg Abbey](/source/Altenburg_Abbey)
*[Garsten Abbey](/source/Garsten_Abbey)
*[Gleink Abbey](/source/Gleink_Abbey)
*[Göttweig Abbey](/source/G%C3%B6ttweig_Abbey)
*[Kleinmariazell Abbey](/source/Kleinmariazell_Abbey)
*[Kremsmünster Abbey](/source/Kremsm%C3%BCnster_Abbey)
*[Lambach Abbey](/source/Lambach_Abbey)
*[Melk Abbey](/source/Melk_Abbey)
*[Mondsee Abbey](/source/Mondsee_Abbey)
*[Schottenstift, Vienna](/source/Schottenstift%2C_Vienna)
*[Seitenstetten Abbey](/source/Seitenstetten_Abbey)

==Salzburg Congregation==
These were however not all the Benedictine monasteries of present-day Austria. Those in the [Diocese of Salzburg](/source/Diocese_of_Salzburg) were formed in 1641 into the '''Salzburg Congregation''', consisting of:
*[Admont Abbey](/source/Admont_Abbey)
*[Michaelbeuern Abbey](/source/Michaelbeuern_Abbey)
*[Ossiach Abbey](/source/Ossiach_Abbey)
*[St. Paul's Abbey in the Lavanttal](/source/St._Paul's_Abbey_in_the_Lavanttal)
*[St. Peter's Abbey, Salzburg](/source/St._Peter's_Abbey%2C_Salzburg)

The diocese also then included two further monasteries, the locations of which are now in [Bavaria](/source/Bavaria) in [Germany](/source/Germany):

*[St. Vitus' Abbey on the Rott](/source/St._Vitus'_Abbey_on_the_Rott)
*[Seeon Abbey](/source/Seeon_Abbey)

Salzburg was secularised and became part of Austria in 1816.

==Later history==
Several of these abbeys ceased to exist as a result of the dissolution of monasteries enforced by Emperor [Joseph II](/source/Joseph_II%2C_Holy_Roman_Emperor) in the 1780s.

Some survived, however, and the 19th century brought a revival in the monastic movement. The two congregations were renewed by Pope [Leo XIII](/source/Leo_XIII) on 23 August 1889 as the '''Congregations of Mary''' and '''Joseph''' respectively, and were combined as the present Austrian Congregation by [Pope Pius XI](/source/Pope_Pius_XI) on 8 December 1930.

==Present Congregation==
The Austrian Congregation (as of 2006) consists of the following monasteries in Austria:
