**Austin Tate** is Emeritus Professor[2] of [Knowledge-based systems](/source/Knowledge-based_systems) in the [School of Informatics](/source/University_of_Edinburgh_School_of_Informatics) at the [University of Edinburgh](/source/University_of_Edinburgh).[3] From 1985 to 2019 he was Director of AIAI ([Artificial Intelligence Applications Institute](/source/Artificial_Intelligence_Applications_Institute)) in the [School of Informatics](/source/University_of_Edinburgh_School_of_Informatics) at the [University of Edinburgh](/source/University_of_Edinburgh).

He is known for his contributions to [AI Planning](/source/Automated_planning_and_scheduling), applications of [Artificial Intelligence](/source/Artificial_Intelligence), and work on collaborative systems in [Virtual Worlds](/source/Virtual_world).

## Early life and education

Tate was born 12 May 1951, [Knottingley](/source/Knottingley), [West Yorkshire](/source/West_Yorkshire), UK.[4] He completed his B.A. (Hons) Computer Studies, [Lancaster University](/source/Lancaster_University), 1969-1972.[4] He completed his postgraduate study in [Machine Intelligence](/source/Artificial_intelligence) at [University of Edinburgh](/source/University_of_Edinburgh), supervised by [Donald Michie](/source/Donald_Michie), 1972-1975 and a [Master of Science](/source/Master_of_Science) degree in [e-Learning](/source/E-Learning) at the [University of Edinburgh](/source/University_of_Edinburgh), 2011-2012.[4]
