Son of John and Annie, Hodson was educated at [Lichfield Grammar School](/source/King_Edward_VI_School_(Lichfield)) and [Christ Church, Oxford](/source/Christ_Church%2C_Oxford). He studied for ordination at [St&nbsp;Stephen's House, Oxford](/source/St%26nbsp%3BStephen's_House%2C_Oxford), and never married.<ref name="ww">{{Who's Who | title=Hodson, Augustine John | id = U54027 | type = was | volume = 1920–2016 | edition = April 2014 online | access-date = 30 May 2017 }}</ref>

He was made [deacon](/source/deacon) in [Advent](/source/Advent) 1906 (23&nbsp;December), by [Edgar Gibson](/source/Edgar_Gibson), [Bishop of Gloucester](/source/Bishop_of_Gloucester), at [Gloucester Cathedral](/source/Gloucester_Cathedral),<ref>{{Church Times | title = The Ordinations on Sunday last | archive = 1906_12_28_837 | issue = 2292 | date = 28 December 1906 | page = 837 | accessed = 12 March 2021 }}</ref> and ordained [priest](/source/priest) in 1908, serving his [curacy](/source/Curate) at All&nbsp;Saints', [Cheltenham](/source/Cheltenham). Between 1911 and 1915 he was Assistant Missioner to the [Gloucester Diocesan](/source/Diocese_of_Gloucester) [Mission](/source/Mission_(Christianity)) before serving [Leckhampton](/source/Leckhampton) as [curate-in-charge](/source/curate-in-charge) (1915–1921);<ref name="ww" /> during the latter he was also a temporary [chaplain](/source/chaplain)<ref>[http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/nra/searches/subjectView.asp?ID=P46080 Reference in National archives]</ref> (1918–1920). Hodson departed Wotton in 1934 to become a [canon residentiary](/source/canon_residentiary) of [Gloucester Cathedral](/source/Gloucester_Cathedral), in which post he remained until death.
