# Austin Freeman

**Austin Mambu Freeman Jr.** (born May 6, 1989) is an American [basketball](/source/Basketball) coach and former player. He is currently an assistant coach at [Morgan State University](/source/Morgan_State_Bears_men's_basketball). He played [college basketball](/source/College_basketball) at [Georgetown University](/source/Georgetown_Hoyas_men's_basketball).

## High school & college career

Freeman attended [DeMatha Catholic High School](/source/DeMatha_Catholic_High_School) in [Hyattsville, Maryland](/source/Hyattsville,_Maryland) until 2007.[1] In his junior year at DeMatha he averaged 17.9 points, 7.1 rebounds and 3.4 assists per game, while in his senior year he improved his averages to 23.1 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists per game.[2] He was selected for the [McDonald's All-American Game](/source/McDonald's_All-American_Game) and for the [Jordan Brand Classic](/source/Jordan_Brand_Classic) in 2007.

He played college basketball with [Georgetown](/source/Georgetown_Hoyas_men's_basketball), playing in the [Big East Conference](/source/Big_East_Conference) of the [NCAA Division I](/source/NCAA_Division_I), from 2007 to 2011.[1] Prior to the [2010–11 season](/source/2010%E2%80%9311_Big_East_Conference_men's_basketball_season), Freeman was named the pre-season [Big East Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Year](/source/Big_East_Conference_Men's_Basketball_Player_of_the_Year). He would not win the end-of season award, though he did make the All-Big East First Team.[3]

## Professional career

Having gone undrafted in the [2011 NBA draft](/source/2011_NBA_draft), Freeman signed with [Fulgor Libertas Forlì](/source/Fulgor_Libertas_Forl%C3%AC) of the Italian [second division](/source/Serie_A2_Basket) in July 2011.[4] He was released by the side in March 2012.[5]

Freeman joined the [New Orleans Hornets](/source/New_Orleans_Hornets) for the [2012 NBA Summer League](/source/2012_NBA_Summer_League). In August 2012, he signed with [Hapoel Eilat](/source/Hapoel_Eilat_B.C.) of the [Israeli Basketball Premier League](/source/Israeli_Basketball_Premier_League).[6] In January 2013, he left Hapoel and moved to fellow Israeli side [Maccabi Ashdod](/source/Maccabi_Ashdod_B.C.).[7]

He joined the [Indiana Pacers](/source/Indiana_Pacers) for the [2013 NBA Summer League](/source/2013_NBA_Summer_League), later re-signing with Maccabi Ashdod. After playing six games, he left the club in mid-November 2013, signing with the [Iowa Energy](/source/Iowa_Energy) of the [NBA Development League](/source/NBA_Development_League) later that month.[8]

On 27 June 2014, he signed a two-year deal with [Upea Capo d'Orlando](/source/Orlandina_Basket) of the Italian [Serie A](/source/Lega_Basket_Serie_A).[9] He left the side to join [Acea Roma](/source/Pallacanestro_Virtus_Roma) on 27 February 2015.[10] At the end of the Serie A season, in May 2015, Freeman joined the [Titanes del Licey](/source/Titanes_del_Licey) of the Dominican Republic's [LNB](/source/Liga_Nacional_de_Baloncesto).[11]

On 6 July 2015, he signed a one-year deal with [Bermè Viola Reggio Calabria](/source/Viola_Reggio_Calabria) of the Italian second division Serie A2.[12]

On November 1, 2016, Freeman was acquired by the [Long Island Nets](/source/Long_Island_Nets) of the NBA Development League,[13] but was waived on November 15 before playing a game for the Nets.[14]

In June 2017, he joined the [Cañeros del Este](/source/Ca%C3%B1eros_del_Este) of Dominican Republic for the 2017 [LNB](/source/Liga_Nacional_de_Baloncesto) season.[15]

In April 2018, Freeman signed with San Carlos of the Dominican Torneo de Baloncesto Superior (TBS), making his debut on April 27 in an 89–88 win over Mauricio Baez.[16]

Austin Freeman played for Jack Attack in the 2018 edition of [The Basketball Tournament](/source/The_Basketball_Tournament). He scored 9 points and had 2 assists in the team's first-round loss to Hall In.

## Coaching career

Freeman became an assistant coach at the conclusion of his playing career, first at DeMatha Catholic, and eventually at [Morgan State University](/source/Morgan_State_Bears_men's_basketball) in 2024.[17]

## Personal life

He was born to Austin and Edith (*née* Bestman) and has a sister named Austina.[2] During his junior year at Georgetown, Freeman was diagnosed with [Type 1 Diabetes](/source/Type_1_Diabetes).[18]
