Historically, Austerlands has been positioned on the [West Riding of Yorkshire](/source/West_Riding_of_Yorkshire) side of the [ancient county boundary](/source/Historic_counties_of_England) with [Lancashire](/source/Lancashire).  The chimney of the former Austerlands Mill is a local landmark.

Austerlands is contiguous with [Waterhead](/source/Waterhead%2C_Greater_Manchester) area of [Oldham](/source/Oldham), the village of Lees and Scouthead and [Springhead](/source/Springhead%2C_Greater_Manchester) areas of Saddleworth.
