**Augustus Ludlow Case** (February 3, 1813 – February 17, 1893) was a rear admiral in the [United States Navy](/source/United_States_Navy) who served during the [American Civil War](/source/American_Civil_War).

## Biography

Born in [Newburgh, New York](/source/Newburgh%2C_New_York) in 1813, Case was appointed [midshipman](/source/Midshipman) in 1828.[1]

He participated in the [Wilkes Expedition](/source/United_States_Exploring_Expedition%2C_1838%E2%80%931842) of 1837–1842 which explored the South Seas and discovered the [Antarctic](/source/Antarctic) Continent.[2]

During the [Mexican–American War](/source/Mexican%E2%80%93American_War), Case held the town of Palisada with 25 men against the [Mexican](/source/Mexico) cavalry for two weeks to block the escape of [General Santa Ana](/source/Antonio_L%C3%B3pez_de_Santa_Anna). After the war, he commanded the sloop-of-war [*Warren*](/source/USS_Warren_(1827)) in the [Pacific Squadron](/source/Pacific_Squadron) from October 1851 to March 1853.[1] Case also participated in the [Paraguay expedition](/source/Paraguay_expedition) of 1859, commanding the steamer [*Mohawk*](/source/USS_Mohawk_(1858)).[3]

In the Civil War, Case was Fleet Captain of the [North Atlantic Blockading Squadron](/source/North_Atlantic_Blockading_Squadron) in its capture of [Forts Clark and Hatteras](/source/Battle_of_Hatteras_Inlet_Batteries) in August 1861. He commanded the sloop-of-war [*Iroquois*](/source/USS_Iroquois_(1859)) from January to October 1863.[1]

From 1869 to 1873, Case was Chief of the [Bureau of Ordnance](/source/Bureau_of_Ordnance), attaining the rank of rear admiral on May 24, 1872. From 1873 to 1875, he commanded the [European Squadron](/source/European_Squadron), and the combined European, [North](/source/North_Atlantic_Squadron) and [South Atlantic Squadrons](/source/South_Atlantic_Squadron) assembled at [Key West](/source/Key_West) in 1874.

Admiral Case retired in 1875, and died at his home in Washington, D.C. in 1893.[1][4] His grave site is located in [Island Cemetery](/source/Island_Cemetery), Newport, Rhode Island.

## Namesake

Two ships have been named [USS *Case*](/source/USS_Case) for him.
