'''August Sauer''' (12 October 1855, in [Wiener Neustadt](/source/Wiener_Neustadt) – 17 September 1926, in [Prague](/source/Prague)) was an Austrian [Germanist](/source/German_studies) and [literary historian](/source/literary_historian). He is known for his publication of collected works by [Franz Grillparzer](/source/Franz_Grillparzer), [Ferdinand Raimund](/source/Ferdinand_Raimund), [Adalbert Stifter](/source/Adalbert_Stifter), et al.

He studied philology and history at the [University of Vienna](/source/University_of_Vienna) as a pupil of [Franz Brentano](/source/Franz_Brentano), [Ottokar Lorenz](/source/Ottokar_Lorenz) and [Richard Heinzel](/source/Richard_Heinzel). In 1877 he received his doctorate under the direction of [Karl Tomaschek](/source/Karl_Tomaschek), then furthered his education in [Berlin](/source/University_of_Berlin) as a student of [Karl Müllenhoff](/source/Karl_M%C3%BCllenhoff) and [Wilhelm Scherer](/source/Wilhelm_Scherer). From 1879 he worked as an instructor and director of the seminar for German philology at the [University of Lemberg](/source/University_of_Lemberg), and in 1883 became an associate professor of German language and literature at the [University of Graz](/source/University_of_Graz). In 1886, he succeeded [Jakob Minor](/source/Jakob_Minor) at the [University of Prague](/source/Charles_University_in_Prague), where in 1892 he became a full professor of German language and literature.
