## History

The village is named after [Ætla](/source/%C3%86tla) and the nearby bridge he is credited with constructing.[3] Between the 1880s and 1950s the settlement had its own [Attlebridge railway station](/source/Attlebridge_railway_station) offering direct trains to [Norwich](/source/Norwich) and [Kings Lynn](/source/Kings_Lynn). It was eventually closed as a cost-cutting measure by [British Rail](/source/British_Rail).[citation needed]

During [World War II](/source/World_War_II) a nearby airfield, designated [RAF Attlebridge](/source/RAF_Attlebridge), was used as an airfield for launching [Allied](/source/Allies_of_World_War_II) aircraft missions against [Axis](/source/Axis_Powers_of_World_War_II) targets in [Europe](/source/World_War_II_in_Europe).[4]
