**Ater Fort** is a fort located 35 km (22 mi) west of [Bhind](/source/Bhind) in [Bhind district, Madhya Pradesh](/source/Bhind_district,_Madhya_Pradesh), India. It was built by [Bhadauria](/source/Bhadauria) kings Badan Singh, Maha Singh and Bakhat Singh between 1664 and 1668.[1][2]

The architecture of the fort is based on [Rajput](/source/Rajput) style . The fort was invaded by the [Maratha](/source/Maratha_Confederacy) sent by [Bajirao](/source/Bajirao_I) under [Malhar Rao Holkar](/source/Malhar_Rao_Holkar) command in March 1737 A.D.[3] The Maharaja of Bhadawar, Maharaja Aniruddh Singh was the political ally of the Nawab of [Awadh](/source/Oudh_State), [Saadat Khan](/source/Saadat_Ali_Khan_I). The Nawab of [Awadh](/source/Oudh_State) marched to [Ater](/source/Bhind_district) via Kachora Ghat. The coalition forces of Bhadawar and [Awadh](/source/Oudh_State) surrounded the [Marathas](/source/Maratha_Confederacy) in the battle did not lasted for a long time and [Malhar Rao Holkar](/source/Malhar_Rao_Holkar) fled from the engagement. The Coalition forces of [Awadh](/source/Oudh_State) and Bhadawar persuaded him ([Malhar Rao Holkar](/source/Malhar_Rao_Holkar)) upto [Gwalior](/source/Gwalior). [Bajirao](/source/Bajirao_I) with his 8,000 cavalry at [Dholpur](/source/Dholpur) retired to [Bundelkhand](/source/Bundelkhand) after the defeat of one of his powerful general. This failed expedition also dismantles the statement that "*[Bajirao](/source/Bajirao_I) was undefeated or invincible commander*".[3]

## Architecture

Khooni Darwaza, Badan Singh Ka Mahal, Hathiapor, Raja Ka Bangla, Rani Ka Bangla and Barah Khamba Mahal are some of the structures present in the fort.[1]
