# Association for Learning Technology

The **Association for Learning Technology** (ALT) is a United Kingdom [professional body](/source/Professional_body) and [learned society](/source/Learned_society). Founded in 1993 as a Registered Charity,[1] ALT brings together people and organisations with an interest in the use of [learning technology](/source/Learning_technology).

## Membership

ALT has over 170 organisational and sponsoring members, and over 2,290 individual members as reported in the 2016/17 accounts.[2] Organisational members include the majority of the UK's universities.[3] Sponsoring members include public sector agencies such as the [Department for Business, Innovation and Skills](/source/Department_for_Business,_Innovation_and_Skills)[4] and the [Higher Education Academy](/source/Higher_Education_Academy), and companies such as [Blackboard](/source/Blackboard), [Google](/source/Google), [Microsoft](/source/Microsoft) and [Toshiba](/source/Toshiba). There are three categories of individual member: Associate Member, Ordinary Member, and, under a scheme which has operated since 2005, Certified Member (CMALT).

## Activities

ALT's activities include the following:

- ALT-C, which is the UK's main [conference](/source/Conference) for learning technologists. Past keynote speakers at ALT-C have included [Martin G. Bean](/source/Martin_G._Bean),[5] David Cavallo,[6] [Wendy Hall](/source/Wendy_Hall), [Eric Mazur](/source/Eric_Mazur),[7] Natasa Milic-Frayling,[8] [Sugata Mitra](/source/Sugata_Mitra),[9] [Peter Norvig](/source/Peter_Norvig), Richard Noss,[10] [Hans Rosling](/source/Hans_Rosling),[11] Carol Twigg, [Michael Wesch](/source/Michael_Wesch),[12] Dylan Wiliam.
- Responding to consultations relating to learning technology and e-learning.[13] Some of these responses are referenced in Government publications.[14]
- Workshops and occasional smaller conferences.

## Publications

- [Research in Learning Technology](/source/Research_in_Learning_Technology), an international peer-reviewed [Open Access journal](/source/Open_Access_journal)[19] which aims to *raise the profile of research in learning technology, encouraging research that informs good practice and contributes to the development of policy*;[20]
- a public wiki with resources of interest to the learning technology community;[21]
- a members' digest, which is sent fortnightly to nearly 2000 subscribers;[22]
