# Asplenium marinum

***Asplenium marinum*** is a [fern](/source/Fern) known as the **sea spleenwort** because of its preference for [maritime](/source/Sea) [habitats](/source/Habitat). Located around the coasts of Europe from Italy in the South to Norway in the North,[1] its most Southern distribution extends to the Northern islands of Tunisia ([Galitte islands](/source/Galite_Islands)).[2]

[Linnaeus](/source/Carl_Linnaeus) was the first to [describe](/source/Species_description) sea spleenwort with the [binomial](/source/Binomial_nomenclature) *Asplenium marinum* in his *[Species Plantarum](/source/Species_Plantarum)* of 1753.[3]
