The '''Asphales''' [holding](/source/holding_company), now '''Fortales''', was founded by [Piet Van Waeyenberge](/source/Piet_Van_Waeyenberge) in 1988.

==History==
In the wake of the attempted take-over of the [Société Générale de Belgique](/source/Soci%C3%A9t%C3%A9_G%C3%A9n%C3%A9rale_de_Belgique) by [Carlo De Benedetti](/source/Carlo_De_Benedetti), Piet Van Waeyenberge wanted to create an investment instrument to provide for [capital](/source/Financial_capital) for [Belgian](/source/Belgium) companies in order to prevent hostile foreign [takeover](/source/takeover)s. Several Belgian businesspeople participated in the holding, such as [Paul Janssen](/source/Paul_Janssen) ([Janssen Pharmaceutica](/source/Janssen_Pharmaceutica)), the Santens family, the ''Holdifima group'' of the families Plouvier-Kreglinger. Later on the families [Debaillie](/source/Luc_Debaillie), Sabbe (ex-Prado), Moortgat ([Duvel Moortgat Brewery](/source/Duvel_Moortgat_Brewery)) and Versele ([Versele-Laga](/source/Versele-Laga)) joined the initiative. The holding bought shares of ''{{Interlanguage link|AG Group|nl|3=AG Groep}}'', a large Belgian [insurer](/source/insurance), one of the predecessors of what would become [Fortis](/source/Fortis_(finance)).
