Canonical URL: https://mediated.wiki/source/Asian_thrush > Markdown URL: https://mediated.wiki/source/Asian_thrush.md > Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asian_thrush > Source revision: 1281995647 > License: Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/) The **Asian thrushes** are medium-sized mostly insectivorous or omnivorous [birds](/source/Bird) in the genus ***Zoothera*** of the [thrush](/source/Thrush_(bird)) family, [Turdidae](/source/Turdidae). ## Taxonomy The genus *Zoothera* was introduced in 1832 by the Irish zoologist [Nicholas Vigors](/source/Nicholas_Aylward_Vigors) to accommodate a newly described species, *Zoothera monticol*, the [long-billed thrush](/source/Long-billed_thrush), which therefore becomes the [type species](/source/Type_species).[1][2] The genus name combines the [Ancient Greek](/source/Ancient_Greek) *zōon* meaning "animal" with *-thēra* meaning "hunter".[3] Two New World species traditionally regarded as *Zoothera* ([varied thrush](/source/Varied_thrush) and [Aztec thrush](/source/Aztec_thrush)) actually belong elsewhere in the thrush family.
