# Ashur Ware

**Ashur Ware** (February 10, 1782 – September 10, 1873) was the 1st [Secretary of State of Maine](/source/Secretary_of_State_of_Maine) and a [United States district judge](/source/United_States_federal_judge) of the [United States District Court for the District of Maine](/source/United_States_District_Court_for_the_District_of_Maine).

## Education and career

Born in [Sherborn](/source/Sherborn,_Massachusetts), [Massachusetts](/source/Massachusetts), Ware received an [Artium Baccalaureus](/source/Bachelor_of_Arts) degree from [Harvard University](/source/Harvard_University) in 1804 and [read law](/source/Read_law) to enter the bar in 1816. He was an editor of the *Boston Yankee* in [Boston](/source/Boston), Massachusetts from 1816 to 1817, and of the *Eastern Argus* in [Portland](/source/Portland,_Maine), [District of Maine](/source/District_of_Maine), Massachusetts (State of [Maine](/source/Maine) from March 15, 1820) from 1817 to 1820. He was in private practice in Portland from 1817 to 1820, and then served as the 1st [Secretary of State of Maine](/source/Secretary_of_State_of_Maine) from 1820 to 1822.[1]

## Federal judicial service

On February 15, 1822, Ware was nominated by President [James Monroe](/source/James_Monroe) to a seat on the [United States District Court for the District of Maine](/source/United_States_District_Court_for_the_District_of_Maine) vacated by Judge [Albion Parris](/source/Albion_Parris). Ware was confirmed by the [United States Senate](/source/United_States_Senate) on February 15, 1822, and received his commission the same day. Ware resigned on May 31, 1866, having served for over 44 years, one of the longest tenures of any United States federal judge.[1]

## Death

Ware died on September 10, 1873, in Portland.[1]
