**Ashnam** is a [village](/source/Village) in [Badakhshan Province](/source/Badakhshan_Province) in north-eastern [Afghanistan](/source/Afghanistan).[1]

## Geography

The village lies towards the northern edge of the [Hindu Kush](/source/Hindu_Kush) mountain range which crosses over into [Pakistan](/source/Pakistan).

It is on [Jurm River](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Jurm_River&action=edit&redlink=1), about five miles from the [Kokcha River](/source/Kokcha_River).[2] the Ashnam is situated 5.8 miles (9.3 km) away from [Khaneqa](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Khanaqa,_Afghanistan&action=edit&redlink=1), 6.6 miles (10.6 km) away from [Safcan](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Safcan&action=edit&redlink=1), 3.3 miles (5.3 km) away from [Dasht Asnam](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Dasht_Asnam&action=edit&redlink=1) and 4.5 miles (7.2 km) away from [Kheasp](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Kheasp&action=edit&redlink=1).

## History

On 6 April 2004 the village was affected by the earthquake that affected parts of Badakhshan. Ashnam was only 25 kilometres (16 mi) from the earthquake epicentre and was listed by the [European Union](/source/European_Union) as an area of assistance following the quake.[3]

## Transport

The nearest airport is 64 kilometres (40 mi) to the north, at [Khorog](/source/Khorog).
