Musical artist

**Ashford & Simpson** were an American husband-and-wife songwriting, production and recording duo composed of Nickolas Ashford (May 4, 1941 – August 22, 2011)[1] and Valerie Simpson (born August 26, 1946).[2]

Ashford was born in [Fairfield, South Carolina](/source/Fairfield_County%2C_South_Carolina), and Simpson in the [Bronx](/source/Bronx), [New York City](/source/New_York_City). Ashford's family relocated to [Ypsilanti, Michigan](/source/Ypsilanti%2C_Michigan), where he became a member of Christ Temple Baptist Church. While there, he sang with a group called the Hammond Singers (named after the founding minister, James Hammond). Later, Ashford attended and graduated from [Willow Run High School](/source/Willow_Run_High_School) in Ypsilanti, Michigan, before pursuing his professional career, when he would ultimately meet his wife, Valerie Simpson. They met at [Harlem](/source/Harlem)'s White Rock Baptist Church in 1964. After having recorded unsuccessfully as a duo, they joined an aspiring solo artist and former member of [The Ikettes](/source/The_Ikettes), [Joshie Jo Armstead](/source/Jo_Armstead), at the Scepter/Wand label, where their compositions were recorded by [Ronnie Milsap](/source/Ronnie_Milsap) ("Never Had It So Good") and [Maxine Brown](/source/Maxine_Brown_(soul_singer)) ("One Step at a Time"), as well as [The Shirelles](/source/The_Shirelles), [The Guess Who](/source/The_Guess_Who), and [Chuck Jackson](/source/Chuck_Jackson). Another of the trio's songs, "[Let's Go Get Stoned](/source/Let's_Go_Get_Stoned_(Ray_Charles_song))", gave [Ray Charles](/source/Ray_Charles) a number one U.S. R&B hit in 1966. That same year, Ashford and Simpson joined [Motown](/source/Motown), where their best-known songs included "[Ain't No Mountain High Enough](/source/Ain't_No_Mountain_High_Enough)", "[You're All I Need to Get By](/source/You're_All_I_Need_to_Get_By)", "[Ain't Nothing Like the Real Thing](/source/Ain't_Nothing_Like_the_Real_Thing)", and "[Reach Out and Touch (Somebody's Hand)](/source/Reach_Out_and_Touch_(Somebody's_Hand))." The duo was inducted into the [Songwriters Hall of Fame](/source/Songwriters_Hall_of_Fame) in 2002. ## Career

The duo essentially had two careers: one as a successful writing and producing team and the other as singers and performers themselves. They started their career in the mid-1960s, writing for artists such as [the 5th Dimension](/source/The_5th_Dimension) ("[California Soul](/source/California_Soul)"), [Aretha Franklin](/source/Aretha_Franklin) ("Cry Like a Baby"), and [Ray Charles](/source/Ray_Charles) ("[Let's Go Get Stoned](/source/Let's_Go_Get_Stoned_(R%26B_song))").[6] Their work with Charles brought them to the attention of [Motown](/source/Motown) chief [Berry Gordy](/source/Berry_Gordy).[6]

Upon joining the Motown staff in 1966, Ashford & Simpson were paired with the vocal duo [Marvin Gaye](/source/Marvin_Gaye) and [Tammi Terrell](/source/Tammi_Terrell), and they wrote and/or produced all but one of the late-1960s Gaye/Terrell singles, including hits such as the original version of "[Ain't No Mountain High Enough](/source/Ain't_No_Mountain_High_Enough)", "[Your Precious Love](/source/Your_Precious_Love)", "[Ain't Nothing Like the Real Thing](/source/Ain't_Nothing_Like_the_Real_Thing)", and "[You're All I Need to Get By](/source/You're_All_I_Need_to_Get_By)".[6] According to Gaye in the book *Divided Soul*, Simpson did most of the vocals on the last album he did with Terrell, *[Easy](/source/Easy_(Marvin_Gaye%2FTammi_Terrell_album))*, as a way for Terrell's family to have additional income, as she was battling an ultimately fatal brain tumor. Though Louvain Demps, singer of [the Andantes](/source/The_Andantes), has stated that she saw Terrell recording the album, Simpson is quoted as saying, in a book written by Terrell's sister Ludie Montgomery, what they saw was her singing the guide tracks for the album, which were later replaced by Tammi's own vocals.

Ashford & Simpson wrote and produced almost all the songs on three 1970s albums for former [Supreme](/source/The_Supremes) [Diana Ross](/source/Diana_Ross), including her first solo album *[Diana Ross](/source/Diana_Ross_(1970_album))* ("[Reach Out and Touch (Somebody's Hand)](/source/Reach_Out_and_Touch_(Somebody's_Hand))")[7] and "Ain't No Mountain High Enough", *[Surrender](/source/Surrender_(Diana_Ross_album))* ("[Remember Me](/source/Remember_Me_(Diana_Ross_song))"), and *[The Boss](/source/The_Boss_(Diana_Ross_album))*.[6] All three albums were critically acclaimed with *[Diana Ross](/source/Diana_Ross)*, her 1970 album debut, and *The Boss* being certified platinum and "Surrender" certified gold.

### Performers

Ashford & Simpson's career as recording artists began in the early 1960s as part of the gospel group the Followers, with whom they recorded the album *Gospel Meeting* (on Forum Circle), later issued as *Meetin' The Followers* (on [Roulette Records](/source/Roulette_Records)). The LP contains their vocals and also four Ashford compositions. In 1964, they recorded "I'll Find You", as "Valerie & Nick". That was followed by several obscure singles recorded by Ashford on the Glover, [Verve](/source/Verve_Records) and [ABC](/source/ABC_Records) labels, such as "It Ain't Like That" (not the same song as they would later write for Martha Reeves and the Vandellas), "[California Soul](/source/California_Soul)", and "[Dead End Kids](/source/Dead_End_Kids)", backed by his own version of "[Let's Go Get Stoned](/source/Let's_Go_Get_Stoned_(R%26B_song))".

Simpson appeared (with [Melba Moore](/source/Melba_Moore)) as part of the "[Blood, Sweat & Tears](/source/Blood%2C_Sweat_%26_Tears) Soul Chorus" on the band's debut album *[Child Is Father to the Man](/source/Child_Is_Father_to_the_Man)* in 1968. After concentrating on working with other artists, Simpson was the featured soloist on the songs "[Bridge Over Troubled Water](/source/Bridge_Over_Troubled_Water_(song))" and "[What's Going On](/source/What's_Going_On_(song))" on the [Quincy Jones](/source/Quincy_Jones) albums *Gula Matari* in 1970, and its follow-up, *Smackwater Jack*.

Simpson subsequently recorded two solo LPs for [Motown](/source/Motown): *Exposed* in 1971, and, the following year, *Valerie Simpson*, which included the single "Silly, Wasn't I". In 1973, they left Motown after the albums Simpson recorded for the label received poor promotion, and the company refused to release an album of the duo recording a collection of their most famous songs for other artists.

Ashford and Simpson married after resuming their career as a duo[6] and would go on to have two daughters.[8][9] In 1973, [Warner Bros.](/source/Warner_Records) released their first duo album titled *Gimme Something Real*. This was followed in 1974 by *I Wanna Be Selfish*. In 1975, Simpson sang backing vocals on [Paul Simon](/source/Paul_Simon)'s [number-one hit](/source/List_of_Billboard_Hot_100_number-one_singles_of_1976) "[50 Ways to Leave Your Lover](/source/50_Ways_to_Leave_Your_Lover)", and in 1976 they released *Come As You Are*. 1977 saw the release of two albums – *So So Satisfied* and *[Send It](/source/Send_It_(album))*. This was followed by the hit singles "Send It", "Don't Cost You Nothin'" (1977), "It Seems To Hang On" (1978), "Is It Still Good To Ya" (1978), "Found a Cure" (1979), "Street Corner" (1982), and their biggest hit, "[Solid](/source/Solid_(Ashford_%26_Simpson_song))", released in 1984.[6]

In 1978, they were featured as vocalists along with [Chaka Khan](/source/Chaka_Khan), on the hit single "[Stuff Like That](/source/Stuff_Like_That)" from [Quincy Jones](/source/Quincy_Jones)' *[Sounds...and Stuff Like That!!](/source/Sounds...and_Stuff_Like_That!!)* album and contributed to the writing of the [soundtrack to *The Wiz*](/source/The_Wiz_(soundtrack)).

In 1986, the duo appeared as themselves in "[Nocturne](/source/The_Equalizer_(1985_TV_series)_season_2#ep24)", an episode of the popular television series *[The Equalizer](/source/The_Equalizer_(1985_TV_series))*, where they performed their hit single "Count Your Blessings" from their *[Real Love](/source/Real_Love_(Ashford_%26_Simpson_album))* album.

On his own, Ashford (along with [Frank Wilson](/source/Frank_Wilson_(musician))) produced the hit "[I'm Gonna Make You Love Me](/source/I'm_Gonna_Make_You_Love_Me)", which [Diana Ross & the Supremes](/source/Diana_Ross_%26_the_Supremes) recorded in collaboration with [the Temptations](/source/The_Temptations) in 1968. He also appeared in the movie *[New Jack City](/source/New_Jack_City)* (1991), as Reverend Oates, an ordained minister who was part of Nino Brown's entourage.

Simpson's brothers were in the record business as well: [Ray Simpson](/source/Ray_Simpson) replaced [Victor Willis](/source/Victor_Willis) in [the Village People](/source/Village_People) and their brother Jimmy Simpson produced the group [GQ](/source/GQ_(band)) (which had big hits with "[Disco Nights (Rock-Freak)](/source/Disco_Nights_(Rock-Freak))" and "[I Do Love You"](/source/I_Do_Love_You_(Billy_Stewart_song))), and was in great demand as a mixing engineer during the [disco](/source/Disco) era.

### Recent years and Ashford's death

In latter times, Ashford & Simpson recorded and toured sporadically, and in 1996, they opened a restaurant and live entertainment [venue](/source/Music_venue), Sugar Bar in New York City, with an [open mic](/source/Open_mic) on Thursday nights, where performers included [Queen Latifah](/source/Queen_Latifah), [Vickie Natale](/source/Vickie_Natale) and [Felicia Collins](/source/Felicia_Collins). Ashford & Simpson recorded the album *Been Found* with poet [Maya Angelou](/source/Maya_Angelou) in 1996.[10] Around that time, they were also featured disc jockeys on New York radio station [WRKS](/source/WRKS).

On August 16, 2006, *[Playbill Online](/source/Playbill_Online)* reported that they were writing the score for a musical based on [E. Lynn Harris](/source/E._Lynn_Harris)'s novel *[Invisible Life](/source/Invisible_Life)*.[11]

Ashford died at the age of 70 in a New York City hospital on August 22, 2011, four days before Valerie Simpson's 65th birthday, of complications from [throat cancer](/source/Throat_cancer). His [publicist](/source/Publicist), Liz Rosenberg, said that he had undergone [radiation therapy](/source/Radiation_therapy) to treat his illness.[12][13]

Simpson released a solo album in June 2012, called *Dinosaurs Are Coming Back Again*, which also featured the last recorded performance of [Nina Simone](/source/Nina_Simone), a second duet with [Roberta Flack](/source/Roberta_Flack) and an instrumental version of "[Ain't No Mountain High Enough](/source/Ain't_No_Mountain_High_Enough)".[14]

In May 2014, Simpson was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Music from [Berklee College of Music](/source/Berklee_College_of_Music).[15]

## Awards and nominations

In 1969, Ashford and Simpson won three [BMI Awards](/source/BMI_Awards) for the songs "Ain't No Mountain High Enough," "Ain't Nothing Like the Real Thing," and "Your Precious Love."[16]

Ashford and Simpson were inducted into the [Songwriters Hall of Fame](/source/Songwriters_Hall_of_Fame) in 2002. They were also recipients of [The Rhythm & Blues Foundation](/source/The_Rhythm_%26_Blues_Foundation)'s Pioneer Award in 1999, and [ASCAP](/source/ASCAP)'s highest honor, the Founders Award, which they received in 1996.[4]

Simpson was inducted among the inaugural honorees to the [Women Songwriters Hall of Fame](/source/Women_Songwriters_Hall_of_Fame) in 2021.[17]
