**Artifact Creek** is a [tributary](/source/Tributary) of [Stewbomb Creek](/source/Stewbomb_Creek) and part of the [Stikine River](/source/Stikine_River) [watershed](/source/Drainage_basin) in northwest part of the [province](/source/Provinces_and_territories_of_Canada) of [British Columbia](/source/British_Columbia), [Canada](/source/Canada).[1][6] It flows generally southeast for roughly 13 km (8.1 mi)[4] to join Stewbomb Creek, which flows into the [Little Iskut River](/source/Little_Iskut_River). In turn the Little Iskut River flows to the [Iskut River](/source/Iskut_River), the largest tributary of the Stikine River.

Artifact Creek's watershed covers 42.5 km2 (16.4 sq mi) and is entirely in [Mount Edziza Provincial Park](/source/Mount_Edziza_Provincial_Park). The creek's mean annual [discharge](/source/Discharge_(hydrology)) is estimated at 1.62 m3/s (57 cu ft/s).[5]

The mouth of Artifact Creek is located about 65 km (40 mi) southeast of [Telegraph Creek](/source/Telegraph_Creek), British Columbia, about 118 km (73 mi) south of [Dease Lake](/source/Dease_Lake), British Columbia, and about 250 km (160 mi) southeast of [Juneau, Alaska](/source/Juneau%2C_Alaska).[4] Artifact Creek's watershed's [land cover](/source/Land_cover) is classified as 51.4% [barren](/source/Barren_vegetation), 15.3% [shrubland](/source/Shrubland), 14.5% [herbaceous](/source/Herbaceous_plant), 10.3% [conifer forest](/source/Conifer), 8.2% [snow](/source/Snow)/[glacier](/source/Glacier), and small amounts of other cover.[5]

Artifact Creek is in [Mount Edziza Provincial Park](/source/Mount_Edziza_Provincial_Park), which lies within the traditional territory of the [Tahltan First Nation](/source/Tahltan_First_Nation), of the [Tahltan](/source/Tahltan) people.[7][8]

The name of Artifact Creek and nearby [Artifact Ridge](/source/Artifact_Ridge) and [Obsidian Ridge](/source/Obsidian_Ridge) comes from the abundant piles of stone chips left from the [knapping](/source/Knapping) of [obsidian](/source/Edziza_obsidian) tools and points by early Tahltan hunters.[1][9]

## Geography

Artifact Creek originates near [Kitsu Peak](/source/Kitsu_Peak), about 30 km (19 mi) south of [Mount Edziza](/source/Mount_Edziza). It flows east and southeast between [Obsidian Ridge](/source/Obsidian_Ridge) to the south and [Artifact Ridge](/source/Artifact_Ridge) to the north. It collects various small unnamed tributary streams before emptying into Stewbomb Creek about 3 km (1.9 mi) upstream from Stewbomb's confluence with the Little Iskut River.[2][10]

## Geology

The north side of Artifact Creek is bounded by a 180 m-thick (590 ft) sequence of lava flows belonging to the [Armadillo Formation](/source/Armadillo_Formation) of the [Mount Edziza volcanic complex](/source/Mount_Edziza_volcanic_complex). A single 9 m-thick (30 ft) [ash flow](/source/Ash_flow) deposit also belonging to the Armadillo Formation is exposed on the south side of Artifact Creek. Along the north side of Artifact Creek are two poorly exposed, low, northeasterly trending ridges of [trachybasalt](/source/Trachybasalt) that may be [intrusions](/source/Intrusion) linked to the [Little Iskut](/source/Little_Iskut_Formation) conduit system.[11]
