**Arthur Suydam** ([/suːˈdæm/](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:IPA/English); born May 18, 1953) is an American [comic book](/source/Comic_book) artist known for his work on *[Marvel Zombies](/source/Marvel_Zombies)*, *[Deadpool](/source/Deadpool)*, *[Black Panther](/source/Black_Panther_(character))*, and *KISS Zombies*. He has done artwork for magazines including *[Heavy Metal](/source/Heavy_Metal_(magazine))*, *[Epic Illustrated](/source/Epic_Illustrated)* and *[National Lampoon](/source/National_Lampoon_(magazine))*, while his comic book work includes *[Batman](/source/Batman)*, *[Conan](/source/Conan_(comics))*, *[Tarzan](/source/Tarzan)*, *[Predator](/source/List_of_Predator_(franchise)_comics)*, *[Aliens](/source/Aliens_(Dark_Horse_Comics_line))*, *[Death Dealer](/source/Death_Dealer_(painting))*, and *[Marvel Zombies](/source/Marvel_Zombies)*.

## Early life

Arthur Suydam was born May 18, 1953. His great-uncle, John Suydam, was an artist in the 19th-century [Hudson River School](/source/Hudson_River_School) of painting. He began drawing at age four, and while in high school, discovered a collection of workbooks from the Famous Artists Correspondence Course, from which he discovered [Albert Dorne](/source/Albert_Dorne) and [Norman Rockwell](/source/Norman_Rockwell), who became his early influences. A reader of comics throughout his life, he was also inspired by the art of [Frank Frazetta](/source/Frank_Frazetta) and [Graham Ingels](/source/Graham_Ingels).[1]

## Career

Suydam's first published work appeared in [Warren Publishing](/source/Warren_Publishing)'s *[Creepy](/source/Creepy_(magazine))* magazine.[1]

Suydam has contributed work to many publications, *[House of Secrets](/source/House_of_Secrets_(DC_Comics))*, *[House of Mystery](/source/House_of_Mystery)*, *[Epic Illustrated](/source/Epic_Illustrated)* and *[National Lampoon](/source/National_Lampoon_(magazine))*, as well as international sci-fi and comic anthologies.[*[citation needed](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)*]

Suydam's creator-owned projects include *Mudwogs* and *Mudwogs II*, which first appeared in *[Heavy Metal](/source/Heavy_Metal_(magazine))* magazine,[1] *The Adventures of Cholly and Flytrap*,[2] and *Demon Dreams* #1–2 (1984) for [Pacific Comics](/source/Pacific_Comics).

In 1993 Suydam joined the editorial staff of the anthology magazine *[Penthouse Comix](/source/Penthouse_Comix)*. In addition to creating his "Libby in the Lost World" series to the publication, he also served as colorist on other contributors' contributions, and as an adviser to editors [George Caragonne](/source/George_Caragonne) and [Bob Guccione](/source/Bob_Guccione) in selecting contributors to the magazine.[1]

Suydam's other creator-owned work includes *Arthur Suydam: The Art of the Barbarian*, *Skin Deep*, *The Alien Encounters Poster Book*, *Visions: The Art of Arthur Suydam*, and *Bedtime Stories for the Incarcerated*.

Arthur Suydam's comic book work includes such titles as *[Batman](/source/Batman)*, *[Conan](/source/Conan_(comics))*, *[Tarzan](/source/Tarzan)*, *[Predator](/source/List_of_Predator_(franchise)_comics)*, *[Aliens](/source/Aliens_(Dark_Horse_Comics_line))* and *[Death Dealer](/source/Death_Dealer_(painting))*. His cover work includes *[Marvel Zombies](/source/Marvel_Zombies)*, *[Ghost Rider](/source/Ghost_Rider)*, *[Hellstorm](/source/Hellstorm)*, *[Moon Knight](/source/Moon_Knight)*, *[Wolverine](/source/Wolverine_(comic_book))*, *[Marvel Zombies vs. The Army of Darkness](/source/Marvel_Zombies_vs._The_Army_of_Darkness)*, and *[Raise the Dead](/source/Raise_the_Dead)*.

Suydam created the box art for the game *[Touch the Dead](/source/Touch_the_Dead)*, and provided the cover art to the [Mickey Spillane](/source/Mickey_Spillane) (with [Max Allan Collins](/source/Max_Allan_Collins)) novel *Dead Street*. He has also done cover artwork for the [horror punk](/source/Horror_punk) band the [Misfits](/source/Misfits_(band)), including their 2009 single "[Land of the Dead](/source/Land_of_the_Dead_(Misfits_song))" and 2011 album *[The Devil's Rain](/source/The_Devil's_Rain_(album))*. He has also done several album covers for The Misfits.

Suydam's subsequent work includes *Kiss Zombies* and *Red Sonja vs. Mars Attacks* for Dynamite Publishing.
