Sutton made his debut for [Cheshire](/source/Cheshire_County_Cricket_Club) in the 1959 [Minor Counties Championship](/source/Minor_Counties_Championship) against the [Warwickshire Second XI](/source/Warwickshire_County_Cricket_Club). Playing for a Minor County, Sutton played a number of games for combined Minor Counties teams. It was for the [Minor Counties cricket team](/source/Minor_Counties_cricket_team) that he made his [first-class](/source/first-class_cricket) for against the touring [West Indians](/source/West_Indies_cricket_team).
