# Arthur Rivers

**Arthur Richard Rivers** (1857–1940) was [Dean of Hobart](/source/Dean_of_Hobart) from 1920 to 1940.[1]

## Early life

Rivers was born in [Teignmouth](/source/Teignmouth) and educated at [St John's College, Oxford](/source/St_John's_College,_Oxford).[2] His younger brother was [Richard Godfrey Rivers](/source/Richard_Godfrey_Rivers), an artist and gallery curator.[3]

## Religious life

[Ordained](/source/Ordained) in 1882 Rivers began his career with a [curacy](/source/Curate) in [Painswick](/source/Painswick). Emigrating to Australia he was [Precentor](/source/Precentor) of [Sydney Cathedral](/source/St_Andrew's_Cathedral,_Sydney) and [Chaplain](/source/Chaplain) to the [Primate of Australia](/source/Alfred_Barry). Moving to [Queensland](/source/Queensland) he was [Rector](/source/Rector_(ecclesiastical)) of St Michael, [Brisbane](/source/Brisbane) and then St Andrew in the same city. He was [Archdeacon](/source/Archdeacon) of [Burnett and Wide Bay](/source/Wide_Bay%E2%80%93Burnett) from 1896 to 1905; and of [Toowoomba](/source/Toowoomba) from then[4] until his appointment as Dean of Hobert.

## Later life

Rivers died on 1 November 1940.
