==Early life==
Renwick was born in [Glasgow](/source/Glasgow), [Scotland](/source/Scotland), the son of George Renwick, a bricklayer, and his wife Christina, ''née'' Condie. His parents travelled as [bounty immigrants](/source/bounty_immigrants) aboard the ''Helen'', arriving in [Sydney](/source/Sydney), Australia on 21 July 1841.<ref name=adb>{{Australian Dictionary of Biography |first=Martha |last=Rutledge |id2= renwick-sir-arthur-4467 |title=Renwick, Sir Arthur (1837-1908 |volume=6 |year=1976 |pages=20-21 |access-date=25 June 2020}}</ref> His father was [Mayor of Redfern](/source/Mayor_of_Redfern) from February 1862 to February 1864 and from February 1867 until February 1872.<ref>{{cite web |title=George Renwick |url=https://www.sydneyaldermen.com.au/alderman/george-renwick/ |website=Sydney's aldermen |publisher=City of Sydney |access-date=3 March 2021}}</ref> Renwick was educated at Redfern Grammar School and the [University of Sydney](/source/University_of_Sydney), where he matriculated in 1853 and graduated [B.A.](/source/Bachelor_of_Arts) in 1857. ==Medical career==
Renwick then returned to Sydney in 1862, living in [Redfern](/source/Redfern%2C_New_South_Wales)<ref name=adb/> where he set up a successful medical practice. He was president of a branch of the [British Medical Association](/source/British_Medical_Association). In 1868, Renwick married Elizabeth, daughter of Rev. John Saunders, at the Redfern Congregational Church. Renwick also became an examiner in medicine at the University of Sydney, and in 1877 was elected to its senate.<ref name=adb/>

==Politician and philanthropist==
Renwick attempted to enter the [New South Wales Legislative Assembly](/source/New_South_Wales_Legislative_Assembly) for the [university seat](/source/Electoral_district_of_University_of_Sydney) at the [by-election in August 1879](/source/1879_University_of_Sydney_colonial_by-election) but was defeated by [Edmund Barton](/source/Edmund_Barton),<ref>{{cite NSW election |year=1877 |district=UniversityofSydney_2 |title=1879 University of Sydney by-election |access-date=25 June 2020}}</ref> however he was elected a member for [East Sydney](/source/Electoral_district_of_East_Sydney) at the [by-election in December 1879](/source/1879_East_Sydney_colonial_by-election).<ref name=adb/><ref>{{cite NSW election |year=1877 |district=EastSydney_1 |title=1879 East Sydney by-election |access-date=25 June 2020}}</ref> He became [Secretary for Mines](/source/Secretary_for_Mines_(New_South_Wales)) in the [third ministry](/source/Parkes_ministry_(1878%E2%80%9383)) of [Sir Henry Parkes](/source/Henry_Parkes) on 12 October 1881, but was unsuccessful in the December 1882 election.<ref>{{cite NSW election |year=1882 |district=East Sydney |access-date=25 June 2020}}</ref> He won the seat of [Redfern](/source/Electoral_district_of_Redfern) in October 1885,<ref>{{cite NSW election |year=1885 |district=Redfern |access-date=25 June 2020}}</ref> and was [Minister of Public Instruction](/source/Minister_of_Public_Instruction_(New_South_Wales)) in the [ministry](/source/Jennings_ministry) of [Sir Patrick Jennings](/source/Patrick_Jennings) from 26 February 1886 to 19 January 1887.
